Scottish artist Susan Philipsz, born in Glasgow in 1965, is celebrated for her installations that delve into the sculptural and emotional aspects of sound. She has been invited to create a new piece for Luxembourg’s Aqua Tunnel, a distinctive site that is part of the city’s urban heritage. Her immersive installations explore the sculptural and emotional dimensions of sound. For the LUGA 2025 edition, in partnership with MUDAM, she has been commissioned to produce a site-specific work for the Aquatunnel—a 900-meter-long underground passageway beneath Ville Haute, linking the Pétrusse valley with the Pfaffenthal district. Originally constructed for wastewater collection, the tunnel also served civil defense purposes, a dual role that significantly influences Philipsz’s sound installation, The Lower World. This installation, composed and recorded by the artist, is broadcast through loudspeakers placed at intervals throughout the Aquatunnel.
