Along the way, take a break at Skuon, fondly referred to as ‘Spiderville’, where you can try the local specialty of deep-fried tarantula.
Phnom Srey and Phnom Pros - Arrive in Kompong Cham by mid-morning and explore the sacred hills of Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei (man and woman hill).
Wat Nokor - Later, visit the ‘fusion’ temple of Wat Nokor, an 11th-century sandstone temple featuring a vibrant modern wat in its central courtyard. This temple boasts intricate carvings, and the unique blend of Hindu past and Buddhist present is rarely seen elsewhere in Cambodia.
Kampong Cham - Enjoy a local lunch in Kompong Cham.
Kratie - Continue the journey along the east bank, passing through the historic river port of Chhlong, which showcases some of the finest examples of French colonial architecture in the country. Proceed to Kratie, a tranquil Mekong port and gateway to encountering the rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphin that inhabits the upper reaches of the Mekong.
Day 2: Kratie – Mondulkiri
Kratie - Irrawaddy dolphin spotting trip: After breakfast, travel to nearby Kampi to search for the rare Irrawaddy dolphin residing in this river stretch. Use a motorized boat to reach the deep pools where the dolphins are found, then switch to a local paddle boat to avoid disturbing these gentle creatures. Sightings are common, although dolphins are more easily spotted in the shallower waters of the dry season than in the swollen river of the wet season.
Day 3: Mondulkiri
Mondulkiri Province - Tour of Bou Sraa Falls and minority villages: Start the day early by visiting the local market, where many Phnong people from nearby villages come to trade, carrying their distinctive baskets on their backs. Spend the day visiting nearby hill tribe villages and the picturesque waterfalls just a few kilometers from the quiet capital. There are numerous minority villages around Sen Monorom, with Phlung village, inhabited by Phnong chunchiets, being one of the largest and most accessible. The unique huts have woven wooden walls and thatched roofs almost reaching the ground. Three or more families often share a single hut. During the day, you may only see a few people, as most are working in the fields.
Mondulkiri Province - Next, travel east to the double-drop waterfall of Bou Sraa, one of Cambodia’s most famous. Stop at a Phnong minority village along the way to learn about their lifestyle. You might be invited to enjoy some rice wine, as Pnong villagers are very hospitable and welcoming to outsiders. Continue to Bou Sraa to explore the falls, where both drops are accessible, and there are swimming opportunities for those who wish to take a dip.
Day 4: Mondulkiri
Mondulkiri Province - Shared visit to the Elephant Valley Project: This morning, gather at a cafe in Sen Monorom and travel to the nearby Elephant Valley Project in a shared vehicle with other visitors. Supported by the Pnong villagers, the project rescues and rehabilitates domestic elephants that have suffered illness or injury. Hike into the forest to meet the elephants and walk alongside them in their natural habitat. Observe them interacting in their newly formed family groups, where they are relearning and displaying authentic elephant behavior. Learn about the elephants’ histories, the local people, and their unique role in protecting these remarkable animals. Enjoy a delicious lunch and relax with a refreshing drink from the welcoming lounge overlooking the forested valley. Later in the afternoon, return to Sen Monorom in a shared vehicle. Please note that this experience is only available on a shared basis with other visitors to the Elephant Valley Project.
Day 5: Mondulkiri – Kompong Cham – Phnom Penh
Kampong Cham - Road journey from Sen Monorom to Kompong Cham: This morning, leave the wilderness of Mondulkiri behind, descending from the windswept, pine-covered hills through lush jungle back to Cambodia’s lowlands. Arrive in the provincial city of Kompong Cham.
Phnom Penh - From here, transfer back to Phnom Penh directly to your hotel or Phnom Penh Airport in time for your flight to your next destination.
Wishing you a safe and pleasant journey.
