Highlights
  • Cave of Apocalypse - Pick you up from the cruise ship to have the first stop at the Grotto of St John - home to the birth of the Book of Revelation, the last book in the Holy Bible. In 95AD, at the time of the persecution of the Christians, St. John was exiled to the Island of Patmos for 16 months where the Apostle heard the voice of God, saw the future, and wrote the book of Revelation. This small cave called Cave of the Apocalypse has now become a place of worship and an important destination for pilgrims.
  • Monastery of St. John - We continue through a labyrinth of atmospheric lanes winding their way to the foot of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian built in the 11th century. Here one can get a glimpse of monastic life and absorb timeless history through the magnificent ecclesiastical artifacts of its museum. Among the Monastery’s treasures are frescoes of the founder Christodoulos and miracles of St. John, ancient documents dating from the 6th century, vestments, silverware, and numerous icons including a work attributed to El Greco.
  • Chora Patmos - From the Monastery, we walk through the winding cobbled streets of Chora. Stroll through the winding streets of Patmos, where houses dating back to the 16th century are linked by a maze of steps and lanes interspersed with small squares, snow-white chapels, and the flowered courtyards
  • Simantiri Masnion - Visit the 300-year-old Simandris House to see its rich collection of antiques and architecture that presents an interesting combination of the Oriental tradition and the Western fashion favored in the 19th century.
  • Grikos Beach - Passing by Grikos bay you will enjoy the virgin natural scene with crystal water before reaching at Bay of Lambi where the beach with its colorful stones gives a small souvenir to take home with us! Here you can have a lunch break before embarking on the car for the short ride back to the port.

Overpriced Patmos Tour - I enjoyed our private tour guide and driver, but felt the tour was way overpriced for what was received. We thought the beach part of tour would be an actual place where we could get in the water but was a drive by the water. Our tour guide did try to make up for it and we had a lovely drink at a restaurant next to the water. Lunch was not available, however, as it was before noon. Tour lasted about 3.25 hours which was less than advertised. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. I would still recommend but hopefully price will be adjusted for future travelers.

Save $ and hire a taxi. - What we were able to see was incredible, but the driver did not speak any English at all. The car was old, with a bad tire, wobbled & did not have air conditioning. We were to have an English speaking driver, but did not pay for a licensed guide. Our driver could not communicate with us at all. We also thought we had him for the day for the $500+ cost, & found out later it was only for 4 hours. Our driver did take us to the beach & pick us up to return to our ship. We would have been better off hiring a taxi at the port.

Not worth money and beware - We had booked numerous other tours and never had problem. This one was the other extreme, We booked tour knowing we would need guide and pay additional as driver would add nothing. s indicated by others. Our guide was good and knowledgeable but at end she skipped the mansion and beach. When we contacted viator we were told we could not prove our point and driver and guide assured that we had not skipped anything which was absurd. This is expensive tour and not worth money. Even if all was included but certainly not worth it for what we received. One last point. On every other tour with a guide we were offered water. On this one no water and guide went and got water for herself and did not even ask much less supply.
