In 95AD, at the time of the persecution of the Christians, St. John was exiled to the Island of Patmos for 16 months where the Apostle heard the voice of God, saw the future, and wrote the book of Revelation. This small cave called Cave of the Apocalypse, which has now become a place of worship and an important destination for pilgrims.

Here one can get a glimpse of monastic life and absorb timeless history through the magnificent ecclesiastical artifacts of its museum. Among the Monastery’s treasures are frescoes of the founder Christodoulos and miracles of St. John, ancient documents dating from the 6th century, vestments, silverware and numerous icons including a work attributed to El Greco.

  • Chora Patmos - From the Monastery we walk through the winding cobbled streets of Chora. Stroll through the winding streets of Patmos, where houses dating back to the 16th century are linked by a maze of steps and lanes interspersed with small squares, snow-white chapels and the flowered courtyards

Epiphany on Patmos - My wife and I went to Patmos in September 2023, for 1 day as part of a cruise (Azamera) adventure. It was one of the most important and anticipated parts of the trip. I wanted to see the cave in which John dictated Revelations, which became the last chapter of the Bible. I enjoyed the bus excursion around the island.

Patmos tour - An interesting tour where we even got to see the mayor, I think our guide planned it special, lol. We enjoyed our time on Patmos , and after our tour had a great lunch in town. Having a private guide gives you so much information on the history surrounding you that you just don't get when viewing on your own

What a great tour…... - What a great tour… probably one of the best we have had and we go on a lot of Tours! Angela, our guide, was so amazing with both the depth of knowledge she shared and also how she allowed us to feel at home on her home island and share authentic answers to the many questions we asked about living on Patmos now as well as in the past!!

Great island - What a great trip. Private excursion is the way to go! Giovanni was a great guide and knew all the historical aspects of the area. We spent lots of time getting into the details of the region. The island was beautiful and much less pressure shopping than the larger islands.

Worthwhile to see, fantastic cultural and religious site. - We went on our own. It was great. Absolutely no need to book the tour. We just payed the entry fee which is labelled as a donation, had plenty of time to see the places and did not have to listen to lengthy explanations by a tour guide.

Nice, Expensive, Short - This was the most I have paid for a tour, I was told the tour would be in Spanish and that is what I asked for. I even called Viator and confirmed, also the tour had the Spanish option please remove it. Being a small Island I understand that tourism is a way o making a f living for the islanders. We were taken to the monastery and to St. John's grotto. Make sure you bring cash to pay for entrances as they do not take credit or debit cards, they also do not like US dollars. We were also taken to someone's house which was not included in the tour, we of course had to pay for the entrance. Nothing that I saw was worth the visit, old furniture, and they also take you to the second floor because first floor is under construction, stairs are very steep, be careful if you have mobility issues. It's a better option to hire a taxi and have them drop you off at the grotto.
