The old Siponto, inhabited since the Neolithic era, was a major port of Magna Graecia. You will explore the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the ancient Siponto cathedral, a real masterpiece of Romanesque-Apulian art.

Adjacent to the basilica, you will witness a stunning 3D replica of the ancient early Christian basilica by Edoardo Tresoldi. 7 tons of braided metal extending upwards 14 meters, accurately mimicking the early Christian basilica that accompanies the magnificent medieval Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. This initiative alters the scenery of the entire archaeological site, originating from the desire of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities to shelter the mosaic existing in the earlier basilica.

Constructed between the 11th and 12th centuries, the Siponto ancient cathedral is one of the noteworthy monuments of the Apulian Romanesque. Besides a square layout, it boasts a remarkable crypt, as spacious as the church.
