- Park and National Palace of Pena - The enchanting history of this site dates back to the 12th century, when a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena was established. On this very location, King Manuel I commissioned the construction of a monastery, the Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Pena, which was later entrusted to the Order of Saint Jerome.
The devastating earthquake that hit Lisbon in 1755 left the monastery nearly in ruins. Despite its dilapidated condition, the Monastery continued its operations, but nearly a century later, in 1834, when religious orders were dissolved in Portugal, it was abandoned. The Pena Park still retains areas that evoke this era, such as the Monk’s Grotto, a secluded spot where monks practiced solitude.
Two years later, in 1836, Queen Maria II married Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a prince from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, nephew of the reigning Duke of Coburg, Ernest I, and King Leopold I of Belgium. As per the marriage contract, Ferdinand was granted the title of king consort.
- Quinta da Regaleira - In the 19th century, Sintra emerged as one of the pioneering centers of Romantic architecture in Europe. Its distinctive climate and natural beauty captivated those who, inspired by the landscape, sought to enhance it with stunning architecture in Edenic harmony, ideal for the contemplation of the Beautiful and the Sublime.
Amidst this charming setting, just outside Sintra’s historic center, lies Quinta da Regaleira. Designed and constructed in the late 19th century, it embodies the cultural, philosophical, and scientific interests of its owner, António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), combined with the artistry of the Italian architect-set designer Luigi Manini (1848-1936). The collaboration between these two creative minds resulted in an eclectic-revivalist architectural masterpiece, with a particular emphasis on Manueline, Renaissance, Medieval, and Classical styles.
