  Quinta da Regaleira is situated near the historic center of Sintra and is one of the most intriguing tourist spots in the area. Constructed in the early 20th century by the wealthy António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), this estate was a realization of his dream, brought to life with the assistance of architect and set designer Luigi Manini (1848-1936). Enveloped by lush greenery, Regaleira Palace offers a captivating exploration.
  The palace showcases a romantic revivalist style, blending Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance architectural and decorative elements, infused with mythical and esoteric symbolism. Noteworthy is the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, where visitors can descend a spiral staircase into the crypt to uncover the monumental initiation well, which leads through a grotto to a breathtaking lake hidden within the gardens.

  The current Palace of Sintra is the result of many royal palaces. This collection of buildings was constructed, expanded, and modified over centuries, with the exact founding date of the country’s oldest palace still unresolved. It is likely that the first structure was built around the 10th or 11th century when Sintra was under Moorish rule. By the end of the Middle Ages, the Palace of Sintra was central to a vast territory managed by the Queens of Portugal and was a favored destination for Portuguese monarchs.
