Castelo dos Mouros - Moorish Castle – Sintra
Monuments
The Moorish Castle, located on two hills in Sintra, dates back to the early Moorish occupation of the Peninsula in the 8th century. It was finally captured by D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, in 1147, and the city’s first Christian chapel, dedicated to Saint Peter of Penaferrim, was constructed. During the Romantic period in 1860, the walls were restored under the guidance of D. Fernando II, husband of D. Maria II, who planted trees in the surrounding areas and revitalized the medieval ruins. Notable features include the Moorish Cistern and the Royal Tower. The castle is approximately 3.5 km from Sintra’s historic center. -

Pena National Palace
Explore the magnificent Pena Palace, a prime example of 19th-century Romanticism in Portugal. Perched atop Monte da Pena, the palace was built on the site of an old monastery. It was commissioned by D. Fernando de Saxe Coburgo-Gotha, who married Queen Maria II in 1836. Enchanted by Sintra, he purchased the convent and surrounding lands to construct a summer palace for the royal family. A restaurant in one of the palace wings offers a terrace with breathtaking panoramic views of the Sintra Mountains and the coast. -

Sintra National Palace - National Palace of Sintra
Museums and Palaces
The National Palace of Sintra stands out among Portugal’s medieval royal palaces and is the most distinctive building in Sintra. Since the earliest dynasties, Sintra has been a favored retreat for Portuguese royalty. The current palace was initiated by King João I, who rebuilt it, and King Manuel I, who enhanced its decorative character and added a new wing. The decoration is a blend of various artistic styles reflecting the tastes of the kings who resided here, with different names given to the rooms. Visitors are particularly drawn to the Swan Room, the Weapons Room, the Magpie Room or Reading Room, and the chapel. Externally, the palace’s most striking feature is the two large conical chimneys in the kitchen, each 33 meters high, now a symbol of Sintra. -
Quinta da Regaleira - Regaleira Palace and Estate
Museums and Palaces
Quinta da Regaleira, located near Sintra’s historic center, is one of the most intriguing tourist attractions in Sintra. Built in the early 20th century by millionaire António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), with the assistance of architect and set designer Luigi Manini (1848-1936), it is a realization of Monteiro’s dream. Surrounded by lush vegetation, Regaleira Palace is a captivating discovery. The palace was constructed in a romantic revivalist style, emulating Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance architectural and decorative forms, infused with mythical and esoteric symbolism. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is particularly noteworthy, where visitors can descend a spiral staircase into the crypt to discover the monumental initiation well, which leads through a grotto to a stunning lake hidden within the gardens.
