Moshi to Londorossi Gate (2100m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m)
Lemosho Route - Hiking duration: 3 hours
Habitat: Montane forest
Start your day with a delightful breakfast at the hotel, followed by a briefing from your guide. You’ll embark on a two-hour drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Park Gate (2100m). In the nearby village, you’ll receive a packed lunch and have the opportunity to purchase mineral water for the journey. The final 45-minute drive to the gate is on a rugged forest track, requiring 4WD vehicles. At the entrance, guides and porters will organize supplies and register with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). You’re now set to begin a 3-hour trek into the rainforest. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys! During the hike, you’ll pause for an afternoon lunch break and reach Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Campsite (2750m) by early evening. The porters, who arrive ahead of the group, will set up your tent and prepare water for drinking and washing. The chef will serve a snack followed by dinner. Be prepared for nighttime temperatures that may drop to freezing!
Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m) – Shira 2 Camp (3840m)
Shira Camp Two - Hiking duration: 6.5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
After an early breakfast, you’ll start your ascent from the rainforest into the heather moorland zone. You’ll cross several streams and traverse a plateau leading to Shira 2 Camp (3840m). This campsite is situated next to a stream and offers a stunning view of the Western Breach and its glaciers to the east. As with the first night, your tents will be set up before your arrival, and porters will prepare water for drinking and washing. Enjoy evening snacks and dinner prepared by the chef. Prepare for a chilly night as temperatures can drop below freezing at this exposed camp.
Shira (3840m) – Lava Tower (4630m) – Barranco Camp (3950m)
Mount Kilimanjaro National Park - Hiking duration: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 15 kilometers
Habitat: Semi-desert
Following an early breakfast, you’ll leave the moorland and enter the semi-desert and rocky terrain. After 5 hours of trekking east, you’ll encounter the Lava Tower (4630m). Packed lunches are provided at the Tower, and hikers have the option to climb the massive Lava Tower, weather permitting. At this stage, it’s common for hikers to experience altitude effects, such as headaches and shortness of breath.
After lunch, you’ll descend from Lava Tower (4630m) to Barranco Campsite (3950m). The 680m descent offers a significant advantage for acclimatization. The descent to camp takes about 2 hours. The campsite is located in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall (“Breakfast Wall”). Drinking and washing water, along with dinner, will be served as you enjoy the sunset.
Barranco Camp (3950m) – Karanga Camp (3950m)
Karanga Camp - Hiking duration: 4-5 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine desert
This short hiking day is designed for acclimatization. After an early breakfast, it’s time to conquer the Great Barranco Wall! Although it may appear daunting, hikers often find this Class 2 hike easier than expected. At the top of the Wall, you’ll enjoy views of Heim Glacier and be above the clouds. The trail then winds through the Karanga Valley. You’ll spend the night at Karanga Camp (3950m), enjoying dinner and washing facilities.
Karanga Camp (3959m) – Barafu Hut (4600)
Barafu Camp - Hiking duration: 2-3 hours
Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers
Habitat: Alpine desert
After breakfast, you’ll begin your ascent. The trail intersects with the Mweka Route, used for descent on the final two days. After an hour of hiking, you’ll reach Barafu Hut. This is the last water stop for porters, as there is no accessible water at Barafu Camp (4550m). “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili, and this camp is situated on a rocky, exposed ridge. Tents are exposed to wind and rocks, so familiarize yourself with the campsite before dark. An early dinner will be served to allow rest before the summit attempt that night. Your guide will provide a detailed briefing on preparing for summit night. Aim to sleep by 19:00!
Summit attempt Barafu Camp (4600m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)
Uhuru Peak - Hiking duration: 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 7-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance: Approximately 7 kilometers ascent and 23 kilometers descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Your guide will wake you around 23:30 for tea and biscuits. You’ll then begin your summit attempt. The route heads northwest, ascending over stone scree. Many hikers find this the most mentally and physically challenging part of the climb. In about 6 hours, you’ll reach Stella Point (5685m) on the crater rim. After enjoying the breathtaking sunrise, continue ascending for about 2 hours on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime achievement! You’ll have a short time at the summit for photographs and tea before descending to Barafu. The descent to Barafu Camp takes about 3 hours.
At camp, you’ll rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun. Afterward, continue descending to Mweka Hut (3100m). The Mweka Trail leads through scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rainforest. Mweka Camp (3100m) is located in the upper rainforest, so expect fog and rain. You’ll have dinner, wash, and rest well at the camp.
