While the grand ancient rock of Sigiriya is rich in history and attracts many tourists to Dambulla, hiking to Pidurangala Rock for a sunset view of the plains offers a magical and natural experience.

Originally a Buddhist monastery revered by King Kasyapa, with temples dating back to the third century BC, it now provides a thrilling adventure for travelers. Located next to Sigiriya Rock and nearly the same height, Pidurangala offers stunning views of the valleys and the historic fortress.

Sigiriya - Ancient Kingdom

Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Start day two with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Sigiriya rock fortress.

This fortified garden city is a masterpiece of ancient urban planning, landscape architecture, construction technology, hydraulic engineering, and fine art, showcasing a unique harmony between nature and human creativity. It stands as a testament to a well-planned city and palace from the 5th Century AD.

The Sigiriya rocky plain, formed from the magma of an extinct volcano, rises 200 meters above the surrounding forest. The site will amaze you with its blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity.

Hiriwadunna - Experience traditional Sri Lankan village life!

A visit to Hiriwadunna village offers a glimpse into the relaxed pace of small village life. Participate in daily activities like an oxen cart ride, a catamaran ride, and a walk through the fields. Learn to cook traditional Sri Lankan dishes and enjoy a delicious buffet lunch served in classic Sri Lankan style. This is a truly authentic Sri Lankan holiday experience.

Golden Temple of Dambulla - After refreshing at Hiriwadunna Village, head to the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries. This cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest and best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka.

Caves, whether limestone or rock overhangs, are the most stable spaces on Earth, preserving history over centuries. The Dambulla Temples are well-preserved and still in use today, nearly two thousand years later, making it the best-preserved antiquity you’ll ever visit.

Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre - Conclude day two with fresh vegetables and fruits!

Located 1 km from the Golden Temple, Dambulla hosts the largest wholesale market for vegetables and fruits in Sri Lanka. Every day, a vibrant array of produce is available, sourced from all over Sri Lanka and nearby fields and villages for distribution across the country.

Trucks loaded with pumpkins, bananas, mangoes, avocados, watermelons, apples, coconuts, beans, carrots, leeks, peppers, and more fill the market. The bustling activity offers insight into the daily lives and traditions of the local vendors.

Kandy - Sacred Buddhist City

Nalanda Gedige - Begin day three with a visit to Nalanda Gedige, an ancient and mysterious structure near Matale, known for its unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist architecture. Believed to be over a thousand years old, it was rediscovered in 1893 by H. C. P. Bell, the Archaeological Commissioner of Sri Lanka at the time.

Nalanda Gedige, located near Kandy, is a significant archaeological site in Sri Lanka, not to be missed for its uniqueness and mystery. Reading up on classical Hindu Temple architecture and Tantric Buddhist architecture will enhance your understanding of this anomaly.

Sri Muthumariamman Temple - While Sri Lanka is often associated with Buddhism, the Sri Muthumariamman Hindu Temple in Matale is a testament to the country’s multicultural history.

Hindus refer to this famous temple as Sri Muthumariamman Temple, dedicated to the goddess of rain. In Tamil, “Muthu” means pearls, “Mari” means rain, and “Amman” means goddess. Hindus worship this goddess for prosperity. Hinduism was brought to Sri Lanka from India, often by English cultivators who brought Tamils from India to work their lands.

The Matale Hindu Temple was built in 1874 on land that was once a paddy field, donated for the temple’s construction in 1852. Although it was severely damaged during an ethnic conflict in 1983, it has since been rebuilt.

Kandy Lake Club - Cultural Dance Show - Enjoy traditional Sri Lankan dancing.

The Kandy Lake Club Cultural Dance Show is a vibrant display of Sri Lankan arts, dance, and cultural heritage, a must-see for visitors to Kandy. Established in 1982, the show brings together all types of Sri Lankan dance on one stage, becoming a popular attraction for tourists interested in the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Dance techniques unique to different regions are passed down through generations. These dances are performed at local ceremonies and rituals, featuring drums and costumes unique to each area. Highlights include dances depicting the majestic walk of the elephant, the colorful performance of the peacock, and the mystical movements of the cobra.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - Conclude day three with a visit to the temple housing the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, one of the holiest shrines in the Buddhist world.

The temple complex is surrounded by a moat and adorned with white elephant carvings. You can also see the four main Devalas (temples of Gods) facing the temple complex. Upon entering the main courtyard, you’ll encounter statues of Weera Keppetipola Disawe, a hero of the Uva rebellion against British rule, and venerable monks like Hikkaduwe Sri Summangala thera. From here, you can view the Octagon and the golden canopy of the chamber housing the tooth relic. Visitors are advised to wear modest clothing and go barefoot as a sign of respect.

Kandy - More Things to Do…

Royal Botanical Gardens - Start day four with a visit to Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens.

The gardens boast over 4,000 plant species, considered among the finest in Asia. Highlights include the stunning Orchid collection and a grand avenue of palm trees. In addition to a wide variety of flowering plants, there is an extensive collection of medicinal plants and spices to discover as you explore the gardens. Spanning over 60 hectares of beautifully designed lawns, pavilions, and plant houses, the diverse array of Sri Lankan, Asian, and international flora offers a fragrant, colorful feast for the eyes.

Ambuluwawa Tower - Next, enjoy an easy hike offering 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains, forests, rivers, and towns in Kandy.

The hike to Ambuluwawa Tower is easy and takes you through a richly diverse area with evergreen forests, flowering plants, creepers, and about 200 different plant species from 80 plant families, including various medicinal plants. Ambuluwawa is surrounded by many mountains, including Piduruthalagala to the East, Bible Rock (Bathalegala) to the West, Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) to the South, and Knuckles Mountain Range to the North. Other visible mountains include the Hanthana Mountain Range, Hunnasigiri Mountain, and ranges associated with Algalla and Kadugannawa. The area enjoys a cool mountain breeze.

Blue Field Tea Factory - Time for a fresh cup of tea!

Nuwara Eliya, known for its tea, has numerous tea factories, tea houses, and tea fields. Bluefield Tea Factory is one of the most popular in Sri Lanka.

Like many other renowned tea factories, Bluefield offers guided tours for visitors. You can see how tea is dried, pressed, and produced, and learn about the equipment and processes involved. You’ll also visit a tea tasting chamber to learn the proper way to brew tea and identify different types of tea.

After the tour, you can purchase fresh tea leaves or souvenirs from the gift shop and enjoy a cup of perfectly brewed tea and pastries at the Bluefield restaurant.

Ramboda Waterfall - End day four with a visit to Ramboda Waterfall.

Located in the Pussellawa district, near Kandy, the area is known for its stunning landscapes of highlands, ridges, plains, streams, and hilly mountains, with Ramboda Falls being a highlight.

At 358 feet, Ramboda is the 11th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The cold winds and cascading rock steps create a beautiful scene against the sky. The mild 2 km trek uphill is quick and accessible to all. With its vivid landscapes and cozy climate, Ramboda Falls is sure to captivate tourists.

Ella / Nuwara Eliya - “Little England”

Gregory Lake - After two days in Kandy, head to Nuwara Eliya, also known as “Little England” for its cool climate and colonial-era bungalows.

Start the day with a visit to Lake Gregory and its park area.

Spanning 225 acres, Lake Gregory is the go-to spot for water activities in Nuwara Eliya, with the park being perfect for picnics. You can find ponies trotting on the grass and boats available for hire to enjoy the lake’s tranquility. Jet skis and windsurfing are also options here.

For a break from the sun, there are private huts to relax in, and plenty of food stalls offering a variety of snacks and local delicacies.

Seetha Amman Kovil - Just 1 km from Hakgala is the Seetha Amman Kovil, the only one of its kind in the world, built in South Indian architectural style. According to the Epic Ramayana, Seetha was hidden here by King Rama to protect her from the demon king Ravana. The nearby stream is believed to be where Sita bathed, and the rock beside it where she prayed. Circular depressions on the rock face across the stream are thought to be the footprints of Ravana’s elephant. One spot in the stream is said to have undrinkable water due to a curse by Sita, giving it a bad taste. The water is clear, and the temple is known by various names, including Sita Amman Kovil, Sita Amman Temple, Hanuman Kovil, Hanuman Temple, and Sri Bhaktha Hanuma Kovil.

Nine Arches Bridge - Train tours in Sri Lanka’s highlands are among the world’s best.

The majestic Nine Arch Bridge is a key reason for this. Located between Ella and Demodara station, it is an engineering marvel from the early 20th century.

Commissioned by the British in 1921, the Nine Arch Bridge stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering and architectural brilliance. Positioned between Ella and Demodara railway stations, walking along the bridge offers views of rolling hills and dense jungle.

Also known as the ‘Bridge in the Sky,’ it was constructed by connecting two bog mountains during the Badulla – Colombo railway construction. The bridge is 300 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 80-100 feet high, exemplifying colonial-era railway construction.

Little Adam’s Peak View Point - Conclude day five with a hike to Little Adam’s Peak.

Mini Adams Peak is the closest and easiest hike in Ella, with the entrance just a 15-minute walk from Ella town.

Standing at 1141 meters, the hike takes 30-45 minutes from the entrance. The summit offers incredible 360-degree panoramic views, with clouds rolling in, providing a breathtaking experience for travelers.

Yala - Safari

Rawana Falls - Ravana Falls is steeped in myth and folklore. It is believed that the demon King Ravana, from the epic Ramayan, hid Sita in the cave behind the waterfall after kidnapping her and bringing her to Lanka.

Only a 10-minute drive from Ella’s main road, Ravana Falls is a must-visit. The drive to the waterfall is one of the country’s most spectacular, with narrow roads and hairpin turns creating a roller coaster-like experience. To reach the falls, trek through a lush jungle, where you’ll see the waterfall early on.

Yala National Park - Time to spot some leopards!

Located in Sri Lanka’s southeast, bordering the Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and became a national park in 1938. Initially a hunting ground for the elite under British rule, Yala is home to 44 mammal species and 215 bird species. Its famous residents include the world’s largest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted deer, peacocks, and crocodiles.

Galle - Southern Vibes

Coconut Tree Hill - On the final day of your adventure, travel to Galle, the southern capital of Sri Lanka.

Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa is the first attraction on your last day.

Featured on many travelers’ Instagram profiles, Coconut Tree Hill is a must-visit in Mirissa. This private coconut estate, with a nearby temple, sits on a high cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean and a pristine stretch of golden beach. Weligama Beach is a long sandy beach with shallow waters and amazing waves. Over 100 surf schools with experienced surfers are located nearby.

Weligama Beach is ideal for less-confident swimmers. Even if you’re not a strong swimmer, you can learn to surf here, making it a popular starting point.

The variety of activities at Weligama Beach will amaze new visitors and keep long-time travelers returning. Enjoy a stunning sunset beach for swimming, relaxing, meeting locals, and learning to surf. The area is filled with cafés, restaurants, bars, and a bustling list of activities, including scooters, tuk-tuks, street food, shopping malls, and more.

Galle Fort - A visit to Galle Fort is a must on the Sri Lankan south coast.

Originally built by the Portuguese in 1588 and expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century, it is now a thriving Sri Lankan community on the Indian Ocean.

Over time, the fort has become a melting pot of architecture, cuisine, culture, and heritage sites, making it an incredible place to explore with plenty to see, eat, and do.

The iconic Galle Fort lighthouse, located at the far end of Utrecht Bastion, is a must-see. It’s the oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka, dating back to 1650 when it was an oil lamp guiding sailors. After admiring the lighthouse, walk along the Fort Ramparts next to the ocean.

Bentota River - Conclude your adventure with a boat ride on the Bentota River.

Just a few kilometers from Bentota city, the Bentota River is rich in biodiversity. Its banks are lined with freshwater mangroves. The Bentota River boat safari is a popular outdoor activity, lasting about an hour and allowing you to explore the mangroves and observe exotic animals like crocodiles, water monitors, lizards, and various birds. The ticklish fish therapy is a tour highlight.
