Built on a rocky hill overlooking the city by the rivers of Buna and Drini, you will find the most important monument of Shkoder, The Castle of Rozafa. Shkodra has been occupied several times throughout history: First by the Romans (168 B.C.), then the Serbians (1040), the Venetians (1396), and finally by the Ottomans (1479). Additional Information

Shkodra city holds a significant cultural and economic position in Albania. Renowned as the hub of Albanian Catholicism, Shkodra exemplifies religious harmony in a singular nation. It was established in the 4th century B.C., serving as a crucial shield for trading routes along the Drin and Buna rivers for many years. In the 3rd century B.C., it became the capital of Illyria. Subsequently, it fell under Roman control and was a part of the medieval Serbian principality until it was acquired by the Turks in 1479. Rozafa castle, constructed in the 3rd century B.C., is a premier attraction in Shkodra. The city, with its narrow lanes, historic homes blending with modern structures connected by stone walls, encapsulates the essence of Albania. It is a destination worth exploring to truly experience Albania.

Excellent for learning about northern Albania - We had a great day with Adam. He told us a lot about Albanian history and could answer all our questions thoroughly with interesting information about the former regime. His English is fluent as he lived in England for many years. He was flexible and accommodated our requests. We recommend his tours.

Enjoyable trip with amazing guide - I made this wonderful trip today and can just recommend it to everyone. Shkodra is an amazing place! If you get the chance, ask for Adam as your tour guide. He really is one of the best I have ever met. He knows everything about Albania and has a thousand stories to tell! He lived in England for a while, so his English is incredibly good. Since I had a (not planned) private tour, he was a bit flexible regarding the itinary and tried to fulfil all the wishes I had. A big plus is that he seems to know everyone around, so you will be surrounded with a lot of Albanians during your trip.
