Highlights
  • Oi-machi - Oimachi is just two minutes off the Yamanote (loop) Line from Shinagawa. Within moments we’re snaking our way down the bustling, narrow backstreets that give this neighborhood the kind of character you just don’t find in Tokyo’s large-scale entertainment districts. It won’t be long before we duck into our first tachinomi (“standing bar”) for a cold beer and some tasty local, Japanese style pub grub. If beer’s not your thing, there are other options. Also available, in case you are a little wary of some of the more ”advanced” Japanese foods, are more classically Western palate-friendly options.

Hunger staved for the moment, we embark on an educational walk, explaining (with visual aids aplenty) the vagaries of the Japanese nightlife scene. It’s a lighthearted stroll, and we have fun with it; you needn’t worry about it being raucous or off-color, and this tour is suitable for teens too, should you have them in tow. Then we eat some more.

Additional Information

Are you set for a cozy (maximum of 5 people) culinary journey in Tokyo, which offers you a far richer experience than what you’d get in Shinjuku or Shibuya? Join us and turn your back on the mass-produced tourist routes, immersing yourself instead in the local evening relaxation spots, devoid of swarms of tourists. Throughout our roughly 3-hour rendezvous, we’ll be hopping between three different ‘tachinomi’ or standing bar eateries, quite akin to bustling tapas venues. Fear not, there will be a substantial amount of food, in case the ‘bar’ reference leads you astray.

Our tachinomi tour is spread over two separate neighborhoods, with a quick 6 minute train transition between them. Complimenting the tachinomi adventure is a subtly anthropological one, offering a variety of cultural attractions and themes, from nocturnal activities to mundane grocery trips and more. With food, three beverages, and train fees all inclusive, your wallet will remain untouched during this worry-free evening.

  • Vegetarian option is available, please advise at time of booking if required
  • Minimum drinking age is 20 years

Must do! - Andrew was fantastic and gave us an insight into the Japanese culture. He took us to small restaurants that were yummy and plenty of traditional bars. He even showed us how to purchase a train ticket home! I highly recommend this tour!

Great tour! - If you get the chance, ask for Mini as your guide. She was great! Very friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable about the culture. We went to some off the beaten path spots and tried some very good food that I would have normally never tried. She even took time to help me set up a Suica card to my phone (no easy task as there were a lot of hoops to go through) and took me to a store afterwards to get flavored Kit Kats for souvenirs. Highly recommend!

Great experience! - Great tour with Andrew, Kristi, and Maya. Food and drinks were great and we learned a lot. Andrew gave us great recommendations for the other days we are here. I really enjoyed how the tour was customized to our taste - we are adventurous eaters and got to try some very unusual items. Definitely “left the tourists behind”!

Great insight into food culture and hidden gems - We had a great time discovering an area called Oimachi where we really were the only tourists. Lukas was super knowledgable and insightful about the culture and customs in Tokyo and Japan and took us to great places that we would never have found or ventured into ourselves. He also was great company.

Tour like a local - We had a fantastic tour with Andrew! We got to explore parts of Tokyo that we never would've gone to on our own and eat at small izakayas we never would've found on our own. If you want to get outside of the touristy areas of Tokyo and explore like a local while learning a lot about Japanese culture, I highly recommend this tour.

Good tour, few things to think about - We had a great guide and enjoyed ourselves. There were two caveats to this, though. The first is that we had our 16 year old daughter with us, and there was nothing on the website about having an age restriction. Seems that most of the places we were going to visit were not about food as much as 'bar food,' served in bars, where you have to be 20 to get in to the bar to actually have the food. This caused a lot of running aorund by our guide trying to find places for us to get into, which was a little awkward. For the two places we did get into, the first one was good but nothing unusual. The second was a bar with some exotic food that was defintely fun. Our guide made it work. The second thing to consider was simply that the location of the tour was not very convenient to anything. I don't know if that was our fault for not recognizing where it was or if the meeting place just didn't make any sense to us when we booked it. The guide did take us on the subway to another area as well, and luckily we had JR Rail passes, but otherwise, that would have been an added expense that was not included in the advertisement. Overall a good experience, great guide, but would probably try and find something more specifically about food.
