- Karato Sea Market - “Welcome! Welcome! Affordable! Affordable!” Located at the western edge of Yamaguchi, renowned for its blowfish and lively atmosphere, is Karato Market. Here, you can hear auctioneers selling fish, and there are also sections for vegetables and flowers, making it the local “kitchen,” bustling with activity daily. Unlike Tsukiji Market in Tokyo, anyone can buy products here. After business stock is traded at 7 am, vendors take the time to explain to tourists the various types of fish, how to enjoy them, and offer daily recommendations.
- Mojiko Retro - A port featuring Western-influenced architecture from a bygone era of prosperity and modernization. Moji Port boasts numerous historic buildings that have been preserved in excellent condition since the late 19th century. The area is particularly appealing at night, attracting many visitors to admire the remarkably well-preserved structures.
- Kanmon Tunnel for Humans (Shimonoseki Side) - The Kanmon Kaikyo, also known as the Straits of Shimonoseki, is a narrow strait separating Yamaguchi prefecture from Fukuoka prefecture on Kyushu Island, Japan. Visitors can walk through the Kanmon Tunnel, constructed beneath the Kanmon Kaikyo, approximately 55 meters (60 yards) below sea level. Completed in 1958, the tunnel took 21 years to build!
The recommended photo spot in the tunnel is at the border of Fukuoka and Yamaguchi prefectures; it’s a rare opportunity to stand at the border of two large islands! The walk through the 780 meter (853 yard) long tunnel takes about 15 minutes, and upon exiting, you are greeted by a stunning view of the Kanmon Kaikyo and the Kanmonkyo Bridge connecting Yamaguchi and Fukuoka prefectures.
- Kaikyo Yume Tower - Constructed in 1996 as a landmark of the Kanmon Kaikyo, Kaikyo Yume Tower is cherished by tourists and locals as the symbol of Shimonoseki. From the 143 meter (156 yard) high observatory deck, a 360-degree panoramic view of Shimonoseki and its surrounding nature can be enjoyed. Visiting Kaikyo Yume Tower at night is highly recommended when it is illuminated. The breathtaking night view of Shimonoseki creates a romantic ambiance, making it an ideal date spot!
- Ganryujima - In 1612, a duel took place between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro, both legendary swordsmen, on Ganryujima Island. This duel is now known as the “Ganryujima no Kessen,” or “Battle of Ganryujima” in English. A statue on the island depicts the duel between these two famous swordsmen, and visitors can learn about their history there. Access to Ganryujima is via a 10-minute boat ride from Karato Port.
- Jokamachi Chofu - The Chofu region, just 20 minutes by bus from Shimonoseki Station, is known for its charming atmosphere, enhanced by the old Japanese-style streets. Visitors can stroll along the Chofu River and visit the “Jokamachi Chofu” museum to learn about Shimonoseki’s history. Additionally, there are various old buildings and artifacts to explore in the region. The Chofu area is a must-visit for those who appreciate Japanese history!
- Shimonoseki Former British Consulate - Shimonoseki has served as a vital port since ancient times, acting as a gateway between the Honshu region and the rest of Asia. Consequently, a British Consulate was established in Shimonoseki in 1906. At the Shimonoseki Former British Consulate, a beautiful red-brick building, visitors can learn about the history of British-Japanese interactions and view various artifacts on display. The Shimonoseki Former British Consulate is just 100 meters (109 yards) from Karato Market, so there’s no need to worry about going hungry.
- Akama Shrine - In 1185, during the Battle of Dan-no-Ura, legend has it that Emperor Antoku, then only 7 years old, was plunged into the Kanmon Kaikyo and drowned by his grandmother to prevent capture by enemies. The Akama Shrine marks the end of the Taira Clan in 1185 and represents a turning point in ancient Japanese history.
At Akama Shrine, visitors can learn about this significant chapter in Japan’s history and view the various temples and shrines that have served the people for centuries. Additionally, the area where Emperor Antoku is said to have drowned can be seen. Today, Akama Shrine is considered a power spot for family health, water safety, and more. It is definitely worth a visit for those interested in Japanese history.
- Hinoyama Park - Hinoyama Park is situated at the summit of Mount Hinoyama, a 268 meter (293 yard) tall hill located near the Kanmonkyo Bridge. Here, visitors are treated to a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of Shimonoseki and its surrounding nature. The recommended spot to enjoy this breathtaking view is at the observatory deck slightly below the Ropeway Boarding area. This observatory is also open at night, providing the perfect spot to appreciate the stunning night landscape of Shimonoseki!
- Shiranoe Botanical Garden - Shiranoe Botanical Garden is located on the eastern side of Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City, the easternmost point of Kyushu. It is situated on a small hill overlooking Suo-nada (the Seto Inland Sea), spanning approximately 8 hectares. The park utilizes the natural terrain, with ups and downs throughout the grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy plants, wildlife, and scenic views throughout the four seasons.
