With the onset of World War II, nearly 30,000 Jews escaping Europe took refuge in Shanghai. Dubbed as “Shanghailanders”, the majority found solace in the Hongkou District, receiving helpful provisions such as food and medicine from the welcoming local populace. The Jewish community prospered in Hongkou, giving rise to bakeries, stores, cafes, synagogues, schools, clinics, cemeteries, and even a Jewish newspaper.
