Highlights
  • Tomine - The initial route takes you to New Guatavita. It is necessary to ascend a mountain road up to 3100 meters (9300 feet) with a nice view over the north of Bogota, then descending to the valley of La Calera, in a very scenic route, which includes the passage through the San Rafael Dam. A second hill is climbed to enter the Suesca Valley and the Tominé Dam. At the end of this route, New Guatavita.

  • Laguna de Guatavita - The town of Guatavita was founded in 1593 by the Spanish conqueror Miguel de Ibarra, although it is worth mentioning that there was an indigenous population on this site for centuries. At the end of the 1960s, the initial village was flooded to build the Tominé reservoir. The government of that time built a new town for its inhabitants, New Guatavita, in a higher area. The town is charming for its architecture. In the square, you can buy handicrafts mainly colorful ponchos made of wool. This is a good place to enjoy a cup of coffee.

  • Laguna de Guatavita - Laguna de Guatavita Park is reached by a narrow road, about 15 kilometers from the town. From there, the journey is covered by walking.

The Ascent. To reach the Indian Sacred Lake is necessary to walk on foot on a mountain path that is mostly cobbled, about 5 km of strong ascent in some sections, reaching up to 3000 meters above sea level. Spectacular view!

The Sacred Lagoon is a magical place that emanates powerful energy from its emerald green waters. It is the product of the rituals that were held there for thousands of years when the shamans deposited gold figures to their gods, as an offering. Many stories, legends, and traditions!

  • Guatavita - Lunch in a typical restaurant and return to Bogotá.

Bogotá Henry is a wonderful guide! - Yesterday we spent the day with Henry on a trip out of Bogotá to see the lake of Guatavita. Henry has great communication prior to meeting us. He picked us up promptly at our hotel. Car was clean and he had waters for all of our family. We are traveling in Colombia with our two sons 4&6yo. Henry is incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable, giving us background information on Bogotá, on Columbia, on Guatavita as we drove to our destination. Everything from history to politics to restaurant recommendations. At Guatavita the government demands that you are taken in by a park guide. The group we were in was Spanish speaking so Henry patiently translated the parts we did not catch. The hike is steep but not long and totally doable with kids our age. And Henry was great with our kids as well. The scenery is absolutely spectacular and I am so glad we decided to make this trip! Also Henry knew so many people in the park. Clearly he is an experienced and well loved guide! On the drive back Henry took us into the town of Guatavita for a late lunch before the drive back. Sun sets early so it was “golden hour” as we drove home and very picturesque accompanied by some Colombian music on the disc player. Henry even gave us a copy of the CD! If you are looking for a quick in and out, this is not it. Henry is a thoughtful tour guide who takes his time to ensure an immersive and highly enjoyable experience. Book him! You won’t be sorry!
