Seongsan Ilchulbong - Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, standing 180 meters above sea level, emerged from an underwater eruption approximately 5,000 years ago, making it a unique geological feature among Jeju Island’s craters. Once used for farming, the crater now serves as a natural habitat for 200 types of vegetation, including silvergrass and giant angelica, as well as various wild animals. Recognized as one of Korea’s top scenic spots, Seongsan Ilchulbong draws millions of visitors annually, many of whom hike to the summit for stunning panoramic views of the ocean, Udo Island, Hallasan Mountain, and the volcanic landscape of the east. It was declared a Natural Monument on July 19, 2000, and acknowledged for its exceptional geological significance by UNESCO on July 2, 2007, when it was added to the World Natural Heritage List. The peak was also designated a Global Geopark Network site in October 2010.
Jeju Stone Park - Jeju Stone Museum is both a museum and an ecological park that showcases the comprehensive stone culture of Jeju Island, known as the “homeland of stones.” The Jeju Stone Museum, along with the Exhibition Hall for Jeju Stone Culture and traditional thatched-roof houses, took seven years to complete, opening on June 3, 2006. The park’s construction concluded in February 2021, after 21 years. The museum is expansive, allowing visitors to explore the entire stone culture of Jeju Island in one location, so a relaxed schedule is recommended. The Outdoor Exhibition Space features 48 Dol Hareubang, a Stone Pagoda to ward off evil and misfortune, Jeongjuseok, which served as the front door for Jeju homes in the absence of thieves, and Dongjaseok, placed around tombs to comfort the deceased, reflecting Jeju Island’s views on the afterlife. It serves as a natural and cultural retreat.
Seopjikoji - Located on the east coast of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Seopjikoji is a picturesque coastline adorned with canola flowers in spring, with Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak in the background and the beautiful Sinyang Beach nearby. Visitors can experience Jeju’s traditional beauty, including vast fields of canola flowers on the hills, peacefully grazing Jeju ponies, stunning rocky cliffs, and the legendary Seonbawi Rock standing in the ocean. Seopjikoji is distinct from other Jeju Island coasts due to its red volcanic ash, known as “scoria,” and unique rock formations that appear only at low tide. It has been a filming location for movies and TV dramas such as “The Legend of Gingko,” “The Uprising,” “Cheonilya,” and “All In.”
Sangumburi Crater - Sangumburi Crater stands out from Jeju’s 360-plus parasitic cones as it was not formed by the accumulation of erupted materials. Instead, it is a maar-type parasitic cone, created as a crater with a hole when numerous materials were expelled. The inner area spans 300,000㎡, with an interior bottom circumference of 756 meters and an exterior circumference of 2,070 meters. The crater’s nearly vertical walls rise approximately 130 meters, making it slightly larger and deeper than Hallasan Mountain.
Haenyeo Museum - The earliest written record of Jeju’s haenyeo, or diving women, dates back to 1629, referred to as “潛女(Jamnyeo)” in the 『Description of Jeju’s Natural Features』 and 『Collected Works of Guchang』 by Lee Geon. Jeju Island’s haenyeo were the primary earners in the local economy through diving and farming, significantly contributing to Jeju Island’s development. They symbolize resilience and industriousness, yet have often been undervalued in society. The Jeju Haenyeo Museum was established to reassess haenyeo culture in Jeju and to document, preserve, and educate about their substantial social, economic, and historical contributions. The museum features informative exhibits on the local environment, fishing villages, folk culture, and the fisheries industry, with a focus on the unique haenyeo culture.
