- The Basilica of Saint John - As per the Catholic Christian Society, John and Mary certainly resided in Ephesus, where one of John’s responsibilities was to care for Mother Mary. During the reign of Domitian, John was exiled to the island of Patmos as a prisoner while spreading Christianity in Ephesus. Upon regaining his freedom, he returned to Ephesus and spent his final years at the Basilica. Notably, he was the only disciple of Jesus who was not executed by the Romans, who were pagans worshipping the Greek gods and goddesses of Olympus.
- Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - Situated atop Bulbul Mountain, the House of Mother Mary is just 6 km from the Ancient City of Ephesus. It is believed that Mother Mary spent her last years at this shrine. According to Catholic Christianity, after Jesus’ Crucifixion, Mother Mary was brought from Jerusalem to Ephesus by St. John the Apostle. The house’s foundation is based on the visions of Anna Catherine Emmerich and was established in 1891. When discovered, the house had collapsed due to an earthquake. The House of Virgin Mary was rebuilt as a church and has been visited by Pope Paul VI in 1967 and Pope John Paul II in 1979, and is recognized as a place of pilgrimage.
- Ancient City of Ephesus - Ephesus is one of the world’s most significant ancient cities, a UNESCO heritage site, and was the capital and commercial hub of Asia Minor during the Roman era. It marked the beginning and end of the King’s Road, one of the three ancient trade routes, alongside the Silk and Spice Roads. Visitors can explore stunning temples, a library (the third-largest in the Ancient World), and Roman-period buildings.
- Ephesus Terrace Houses - Known as “the houses of the rich,” the Terrace Houses are located in the ancient city of Ephesus, opposite the Temple of Hadrian. These houses provide valuable insights into Roman family life. Visitors can view all parts of the house adorned with exquisite mosaics and frescoes, showcasing the wealth of the inhabitants, and featuring a heating system similar to Roman baths.
- Nomadic Carpet & Kilims - Travelers to Turkey often return home with souvenirs, including Turkish delight and the famous Nazar Boncuk (Evil Eye). A popular choice is a Turkish rug or carpet, which is more than a mere souvenir as it reflects the country’s rich cultural heritage. Visitors can enjoy a delicious all-inclusive lunch and visit wholesale artisans.
- The Temple of Artemis - Known as the first settlement of the Ephesians, the Temple of Artemis is a site where only the basic structure and a column remain today. Despite this, it is worth visiting to experience the temple’s current atmosphere.
