Chasing Nature’s Wonders: A Surfer’s Icelandic Adventure
Trading surfboards for hiking boots, my wife and I embarked on a journey through Iceland’s Golden Circle. From geysers to waterfalls, this tour promised a different kind of adventure, and it delivered beyond expectations.
A Journey Through Iceland’s Natural Wonders
Iceland has always been on my bucket list, not for its waves, but for its raw, untamed beauty. As a surfer, I’m used to chasing the perfect wave, but this time, I was chasing something different. The allure of the Golden Circle, with its promise of geysers, waterfalls, and volcanic craters, was too tempting to resist. My wife and I decided to take a break from our usual beach-hopping adventures and dive into the heart of Iceland’s natural wonders.
Our journey began with a seamless airport transfer from KEF to Reykjavik. Our driver, Vitalijs, was a gem. He was punctual, kept track of our flight, and even reached out when we landed. It was a relief to have someone so attentive, especially when we were dealing with the chaos of lost baggage. Once we were settled, it was time for the main event: the Golden Circle tour.
The Magic of the Golden Circle
Our guide for the day, Didzis, was nothing short of amazing. He had an uncanny ability to navigate the roads, taking us through scenic routes that we would have otherwise missed. Each stop on the tour was meticulously planned, allowing us to make the most of our limited time. Didzis would drop us off at the top of a location and meet us at the bottom, ensuring we expended minimal effort while maximizing our experience.
Thingvellir National Park was our first stop. Standing between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates was surreal. The landscape was a stark contrast to the sandy beaches I’m used to, but it was breathtaking in its own right. The park’s geological significance and cultural history were fascinating, and Didzis’s knowledge of the area added depth to our visit.
Next, we ventured to the mesmerizing Bruarfoss Waterfall. The vibrant blue waters, surrounded by lush greenery and basalt rock formations, were a sight to behold. It was a short walk to the falls, but every step was worth it. The tranquility of the place was a welcome change from the bustling surf spots I’m accustomed to.
Geysers, Waterfalls, and Craters
The Geysir Geothermal Area was our next destination. Watching Strokkur erupt was a thrilling experience. The anticipation built with each bubbling and steaming moment, and when it finally shot water into the air, it was a spectacle to remember. It reminded me of the unpredictability of the ocean, where every wave is different and full of surprises.
Gullfoss Waterfall was another highlight. The sheer power and beauty of the falls were awe-inspiring. The sound of the water crashing into the canyon was like nature’s symphony, a reminder of the ocean’s roar during a storm. We took our time exploring the trails, capturing the perfect shots, and soaking in the majestic views.
Our final stop was the Kerid Crater. The vibrant red and green slopes contrasted beautifully with the deep blue waters of the crater lake. It was a photographer’s dream, and I couldn’t resist capturing the moment. The crater’s volcanic past was evident, and it was a humbling experience to stand in a place shaped by nature’s forces.
As our tour came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for Iceland’s natural beauty. It was a different kind of adventure, one that left a lasting impression on my heart and spirit. If you’re ever in Iceland, I highly recommend the Golden Circle Tour. It’s a journey that will leave you in awe of the world’s wonders.
