  • Franciscan monastery Kraljeva Sutjeska - By the arrival in Kraljeva Sutjeska You have the feeling that You have sailed through time and have returned to the past. Kraljeva Sutjeska and fortress Bobovac were the seat of two Bosnian kings of the Kotromanić, Tomaš and Tvrtko dynasties. The importance of this historical fortress is also that the Bosnian royal crown was guarded, the royal grave chapel, which is assumed that King Stjepan Ostoja ordered the old bishop’s church to be rearranged for that purpose. Three Bosnian kings were buried there: Stjepan Ostoja, Tvrtko II Kotromanić and Stjepan Tomaš Kotromanić. The only fully preserved object in Bobovac is the mausoleum which Queen Katarina raised to the King Tvrtko after his death. His remains were moved to an unknown location during the last war. For the last Bosnian Queen, St. Catherine, women as a sign of grief in their traditional costumes cover the head with a black scarf.

On reaching Kraljeva Sutjeska, one feels like they’ve traveled back in time. Known as the home to two Bosnian kings from the Kotromanić dynasty, Tomaš and Tvrtko, Kraljeva Sutjeska and Bobovac fortress possess significant historical aura. This ancient fortress gained importance as it safeguarded the Bosnian royal crown and also served as the royal burial site. It’s believed that King Stjepan Ostoja transformed the old bishop’s church into this royal grave chapel. Three of Bosnia’s kings were laid to rest here: Stjepan Ostoja, Tvrtko II Kotromanić, and Stjepan Tomaš Kotromanić. Bobovac’s one fully conserved edifice is the mausoleum erected by Queen Katarina in memory of King Tvrtko, following his demise. In remembrance of the last Bosnian Queen, St. Catherine, women traditionally don a black scarf over their heads as a symbol of mourning.

After an approximately 2-hour journey, you’ll find yourself in Kraljeva Sutjeska, nearing the medieval town of Bobovac.
