Highlights
  • Stari Grad, Old Town, Travnik - During the Middle Ages, the Travnik area was recognized as the župa Lašva province within the medieval Bosnian Kingdom. The first mention of the area comes from Bela IV of Hungary in 1244. Travnik was among several fortified towns in the region, with its fortress Kaštel evolving into today’s old town sector. The city itself is first noted by the Ottomans during their conquest of nearby Jajce.
  • Sarena Dzamija - The Sarena Dzamija (Multi-Colored Mosque), built in 1757, is hard to miss. Known for its vibrant colors and unique, intricate artistic details on the exterior walls, along with its carved wood, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans. It is also the only mosque in the country believed to house hairs of the prophet. The mosque features unusual flower motifs painted on the outside and is one of only two mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina where the prayer room is on the first floor, with the ground floor used for business activities.
  • Tvrdava Stari grad - Old Fort is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved medieval fortified structures in Bosnia, showcasing characteristics from various historical periods. There are no known records of the exact year, duration of construction, or the builder. Historians generally agree that the castle was built in the late 14th or early 15th century. Based on construction style and other evidence, it is believed that King Tvrtko II Kotromanić was the original builder, though King Stjepan Dabiša is also mentioned as a possible builder.
  • Fortress of Jajce - The fortress of Jajce is situated above the town at an altitude of 470 meters, within the medieval city complex dating back to the 13th century. The fortress, built over several centuries, encloses the architectural remains of a mid-15th century castle. On the southwestern side of the fortress is a portal featuring the royal coat of arms, dating back to the era of Tvrtko II and King Stjepan Tomasevic, who relocated the royal court to Jajce in 1421.
  • Pliva Waterfall - Standing 17 meters tall, the Pliva waterfall is one of Jajce’s most prominent landmarks. This natural wonder is located in the heart of the town and is recognized as one of the twelve most beautiful waterfalls in the world. It is also the only waterfall globally that forms an estuary, merging the Pliva River with the Vrbas River. Whether viewed from below or above, the Pliva waterfall offers a breathtaking sight!
  • Pliva Lakes - Just a few kilometers from Jajce lie the Great and Small Pliva Lakes, which provide numerous recreational activities such as fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, volleyball, biking, and walking. Public barbecue facilities are also available along the lakeside for picnics.
  • Mlincici - Although no longer used for milling, the Pliva Lakes watermills attract tourists from the nearby giant waterfall in town. While the waterfall is impressive with its dramatic 65-foot drop, the quaint shingled watermills evoke a sense of local folklore, as if they might be home to trolls with dragons hitched nearby.

Warmest recommendations!! - My parents originally come from Bosnia, so I already had a lot of knowledge. But since I had some friends with me from home, it seemed obvious with a guided tour. It was certainly not something we regretted, from here the warmest recommendations must sound, the guide was super nice and knew a lot about what he was talking about. This trip contained what we expected and much more. Subsequently, the guide was also very helpful and gave us his contact details, even outside of his working hours he was helpful with recommendations for places to eat, attractions etc. If you could give more than 5 stars, they would have!

Great guide - We felt very privileged to have Bakir as our guide. Bakir has a great sense of humour, and is extremely patient with our endless “interrogations”! As we had already spent a week in Bosnia by the time we took the tour, our curiosity at that stage has morphed from history to current affairs and pop culture. The insights Bakir generously shared, coupled with his brutally honest take on everything that is happening, made the tour unusually enriching and enjoyable. Hours flew by for us, and I hope we didn’t bore him. ;) Oh he is a great driver too! Special thanks to Mak as well who helped arrange the trip at short notice.

Great trip to beautiful sites - This was a great experience in our trip to Bosnia. Mak, our guide was excellent at giving us information about the sites and many interesting details about Bosnia in general. He was very patient since my husband and I like to take many pictures. Mak also made several stops to have a cold drink and refresh ourselves from a really warm day. Our pick up was right on time and the vehicle we rode was impecable. I would recommend this trip to anyone interested in history and want to visit beautiful and photogenic sites outside Sarajevo.

From Sarajevo to Jajce. - My family and I had a marvelous day taking the Medievil Tour with Alan. Alans knowledge was most impressive, his kindness most welcome and his love for his country obvious. Alan cared for my family as a brother.

An interesting medieval Bosnia tour - My friend and I took this tour with Alen, whom I called Ali, as our tour guide. He shared interesting tidbits during the trip. We really enjoyed our day trip where we first went to Travnik. The scenery from Sarajevo to Travnik is so beautiful, it does not lose to that of west europe. While in Travnik, we went to Travnik mosque with its beautiful design, then to the Blue Spring where the water is crystal clear and finally to Travnik fortress where we can see an overview of Travnik old town and its surrounding. Next we went to Jajce where we went to Jajce fortress and to Pliva waterfall. The waterfall makes a very beautiful view when seen from across the town. Unfortunately, i could not take take the picture from that spot hence I could only satisfy myself with the pictures taken from above the waterfall. The last leg of the trip is Pliva lake and the watermills. While I found Pliva lake is just so-so, I love the view of the watermills, they make a nice pictures.. All being said, I am grateful that I found this tour and Ali. Thank you Ali for distracting the dogs when you notice my fear of them :). And also thank you for the recommendation of the grilled meat restaurant, we enjoyed the food there.
