The first stop is the Sapporo Clock Tower, known as Tokedai in Japanese. This is Japan’s oldest clock tower, featuring an American architectural design and is one of the few remaining western-style buildings in Sapporo. It stands as a true symbol of the city. A unique feature of this tower is that its clock operates solely through the power of gravity. We’ll explore the charming museum on the first floor before heading upstairs to the second floor to observe the clock’s inner workings and the fascinating gravity mechanism.
- Sapporo TV Tower - Next, we’ll stroll to the nearby Sapporo TV Tower, constructed in 1957 and reaching a height of 147.2 meters. Designed by the renowned Japanese architect Tachu Naito, who also designed the Tokyo Tower, this structure offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Sapporo from its top observation deck. The guide will point out various landmarks from this vantage point, providing insights into the city’s layout.
- Nijo Market - Our itinerary continues with a visit to the 2jo Fish Market, a hub for the freshest seafood on Hokkaido Island. The market boasts an endless variety of seafood, sure to delight any seafood enthusiast. We’ll enjoy lunch at one of the cozy stall-style restaurants within the market.
- Sapporo City Museum - After lunch, it’s time to “walk off” the delicious seafood with a brisk 20-minute walk through Odori Park to the Old Court of Appeals Building, now known as the Sapporo City Museum. This impressive structure, built in 1926 from porous-tuff stone, originally served as Sapporo’s High Court. Inside, visitors can explore galleries showcasing local history, including a fascinating “mocked” exhibition of a Criminal Courtroom from the Appeals Court era. Visitors can even borrow legal uniforms and take photos inside the courtroom. Above the main entrance is a blindfolded statue of the Goddess of Law, symbolizing equality before the law regardless of wealth or power. This is a captivating experience worth trying!
- Tanukikoji Shopping Street - This historic shopping arcade in Hokkaido spans 7 blocks and features over 200 stores and eateries. Here, the guide will provide “free time” for you to explore independently. You can browse and purchase souvenirs for yourself and loved ones back home. At the designated time and place, you’ll regroup with the guide to proceed to Sapporo’s Entertainment District for sake tasting.
- Cocono Susukino - The tour concludes in Susukino, Sapporo’s Entertainment District, with a delightful Japanese Sake Tasting at Cocono Susukino. While most sake originates from Hokkaido, there are varieties from across Japan. You’ll have the opportunity to sample different “shots of sake” from several bottles. The guide will offer brief explanations of the various sake types and their regions of origin. This is a must for sake enthusiasts. Please note, this event is exclusively for those who enjoy sake and are 20 years of age or older.
