Additional Information

Please note that there are multiple operators utilizing the same cavern, hence we cannot ensure exclusivity. For a less packed adventure, we suggest considering our blue ice experience - glacier trekking missions.

This is an intimate group trip to the Sapphire ice cave present in Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe. This excursion is run by a small, indigenous company.
You will converge with your certified guide at Jökulsárlón. Then, a roughly 30 minutes drive in a 4x4 vehicle will get you to the glacier’s parking lot. It’s an approximate 20-minute hike to the glacier’s rim where the Sapphire cave lies. We typicaly allot between 30-45 minutes for cave exploration, providing ample time for photo ops and investigating the cave’s different structures.

Ice cave adventure - For Ice cave tour, we chose Melrakki Adventures again, as we had the most amazing time and so positive experience with them on glacier hike. As ice cave is small, my husband and I went solo just on a private tour with our guide Kateřina from Melrakki. Trip started with the ride on off-road car possible to drive on very difficult road which leads to the Ice cave enterance. What already was an adventure! Before entering the cave, we were instructed how to behave there to stay safe. Timing is everything when you go to small space like ice cave, so tour started soon enough that we could experience the ice cave just with small number of other people from the beginning. Next to all interesting talking about how this ice miracle happened and was created, Kateřina took many pictures that we asked her for, guided us where to see the best light in the cave and to continue on our knees to reach the space of only one meter high where we were actually under the glacier. We didn´t need to rush, so I can meditate for a moment and absorb the atmosphere of this unique place. What an amazing moment!

Great ice cave experience!! - It was one of our best experience in Iceland and we are very lucky to book this extra small group tour. Our tour guide is Franziska, she is very nice and competent, speaks english and german fluently. With only 5 tour member including Franziska, the tour was very enjoyable. We had a lot of time to talk about the iceland, explore the ice cave and made great photos. Franziska know the best spot and helped us to take pictures. Overall it meets our expectation to visit the ice cave without hurry. I would absolutely recommend it. And for Franziska, keep up the good work 👍

It feels like another world! - The ice cave is amazing! Words are inadequate to describe the beauty and color of the ice. A few cautionary notes - it is about a mile hike from the parking spot on rocky terrain. The last portion of the cave is a tunnel which requires crawling on your hands and knees. I opted out of this part as it felt too confined. The cave changes every day so the tunnel may change also. Oddur, our guide, was so informative and helpful. His camera was better than ours and he provided us with pix from inside the cave.
