Highlights
  • Lao Chai - Textile Workshop

Vietnam is home to 54 distinct ethnic minority groups, each with their own unique textile traditions that contribute to their cultural attire. The Red Dao and Black H’Mong communities are particularly notable for their stunning textiles, which feature emblematic patterns, detailed fabric decorations, meticulous hand-stitched embroidery, and the use of natural dyes. In Lao Chai Village, you can spend a day with Black H’Mong craftspeople learning about the cultivation of hemp, the art of batik design, and the process of dyeing with indigo during this comprehensive textile workshop.

The day also includes a leisurely 30-minute trek to Lao Chai in the morning, followed by a relaxed 1-hour stroll from Lao Chai to Ta Van Village, after which a vehicle will be available for pickup.

However, due to time limitations, the dyeing process cannot be completed (arrangements can be made if you are spending multiple days in Sapa). The organic hemp provides a splendid final result.

Classes are conducted in our Sapa workshop. Sessions typically commence around 9.00am (with some flexibility) and typically endure between 5 to 6 hours. The schedule includes learning about Hmong symbolism, the significance of textiles, and cultural history.

Do not pay more than $50 for these experiences - The tour is overpriced. No different from the $25 trekking tours. We travelled to the same villages and ate at the same restaurant as the other trekking tours. Textile workshop on offer in the village for 350k VND ($14). I do not like that I overpaid for this experience. I hope a large amount of The $180 I paid goes to my guide directly as she was sweet.
