Cerro Santa Lucia - This charming green oasis in the heart of downtown offers a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, allowing visitors to enjoy the lush greenery and fresh air while engaging in conversation. It’s important to pace oneself, as reaching the main terrace or climbing to the top of the tower requires some fitness. Depending on the vantage point, one can admire different parts of the city. Although a complete view isn’t possible from here, the aim is to discover personal points of interest within this “little jungle” created for the enjoyment of both visitors and locals. Be mindful of the uneven paths, as the terrain is rocky. Visitors can take photos, explore lookout points, and learn about the city’s historical and current activities.

La Moneda - The Palacio de la Moneda, or Government Palace, was originally built to serve as the mint house and was inaugurated in 1804, just before Chile began its journey to independence. Constructed using a blend of techniques, it became a school of craftsmanship under the guidance of Roman architect Joaquín Toesca, who arrived in Santiago in 1780 to oversee the project but did not live to see its completion. The square is adorned with statues of past presidents, each contributing to the narrative of Chile’s governmental history. The 1973 coup d’état occurred here, and the reminders of this event, along with other historical markers, provide insight into human rights, civic responsibility, and the nation’s aspirations for the future.
-
Plaza de La Constitucion - Constitution Square, located north of the Civic Center and The City, is surrounded by the branches of the Executive power and offers a small green space where families and dogs can enjoy themselves. Every 48 hours, the guard changes and performs instrumental music during their parade. Statues of former presidents of the Republic of Chile serve as reminders of the significance of various public figures in shaping the country’s current state. It’s a good place to pause and reflect on economic indicators, public opinion, and the current public agenda. The aim is not to educate but to share information, allowing visitors to form their own conclusions about the state of affairs.
-
Plaza Montt Varas - Dominated by flat water fountains and the statues of President Manuel Montt and Antonio Varas, this plaza is home to the imposing Supreme Court of Justice, a symbol of both stability and controversy. Demonstrators are often found at its gates, highlighting that justice, though impartial, may not always seem fair to everyone. Opposite the court, where a temple once stood, is another significant republican institution: the former National Congress, which was closed after the 1973 coup d’état. Today, important meetings are held here, though public access is not always granted. Guides provide insights into the composition of the republic, the three branches of government, and current public affairs, offering information for personal analysis without attempting to persuade.

Plaza de Armas - Established on February 12, 1541, the Main Square and the Governor’s house, led by Pedro de Valdivia, were located on its northwest side, according to historical accounts. Despite new perspectives on the city’s origins, it is widely accepted that Santiago’s beginnings, and Chilean civic life, are linked to this square. Initially a hub for logistics related to the Spanish colony, it housed horses, weapons, carts, and fortresses, followed by the church, viceroy’s office, gallows, livestock rodeo, jail, city council, religious events, and jousting sports. In the early 19th century, it became the civic center of the young republic and has since evolved into a place of entertainment, commerce, and tradition. Situated in the heart of Santiago, it always offers something of interest. Visitors are encouraged to capture its essence, admire it, and continue their journey.
-
Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana) - Constructed between the mid-18th and 19th centuries, the cathedral’s initial version cost nearly six hundred Chilean pesos of the time, a significant sum. It was not the first temple on the site, as at least two others preceded it with different designs and structures. The current cathedral has undergone numerous modifications since its consecration, up until just before World War I. Services are held during the week and on weekends, with noon being a popular visiting time. Photography is allowed inside, except in certain areas where indicated, but visitors should keep their voices low and disable camera flashes. Eating or drinking inside is discouraged. The cathedral is rich with symbols of kindness, martyrdom, patriotism, and other concepts for reflection. The “Capilla del Santísimo Sacramento” and the “Parroquia el Sagrario” are significant and sensitive parts of this religious complex.
