Embarking on the Journey to the Lost City

The anticipation was palpable as I arrived in Santa Marta, ready to embark on the Lost City Trek. This was not just any trek; it was a journey into the heart of Colombia’s rich history and breathtaking landscapes. As a biologist and environmental activist, the opportunity to explore the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a region teeming with biodiversity and cultural heritage, was irresistible.

Our adventure began in the bustling Centro Historico de Santa Marta, where we met our guide, Camacho. His deep knowledge of the land and its indigenous communities was immediately apparent. As we set off in a 4x4 truck towards the Mamey region, Camacho shared stories of the Tayronas, the ancient inhabitants of the Lost City. His passion for the land was infectious, setting the tone for the days ahead.

Upon reaching the Mamey, we enjoyed a hearty lunch before beginning our trek. The path was challenging, yet every step was a reminder of the resilience of the Tayronas who once walked these trails. As we arrived at Camp 1, surrounded by rivers and waterfalls, I felt a profound connection to the natural world—a reminder of why I dedicate my life to conservation.

Immersed in Nature and Culture

The second day of our trek took us deeper into the Sierra Nevada, through the Buritaca river valley. Here, we encountered the indigenous Kogui village of Mutanshi. The Kogui people, descendants of the Tayronas, live in harmony with nature, embodying a philosophy of balance and respect for the earth. It was a humbling experience to witness their way of life, a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving these cultures and ecosystems.

Our translator, Pilar, was instrumental in bridging the gap between our group and the Kogui. Her warmth and enthusiasm made every interaction meaningful, ensuring that we understood the significance of what we were experiencing. As we continued our journey, the jungle enveloped us, its vibrant flora and fauna a testament to the region’s ecological richness.

After a long day of hiking, we arrived at Camp 3, where Pollo, our cook, greeted us with a feast. His culinary skills were nothing short of miraculous, transforming simple ingredients into meals that nourished both body and soul. As we gathered around the table, sharing stories and laughter, I felt a sense of camaraderie with my fellow trekkers—a trail family united by a shared adventure.

Reaching the Lost City

The final ascent to the Lost City was both physically demanding and spiritually uplifting. Climbing the 1,200 steps built by the Tayronas, I was acutely aware of the history beneath my feet.
