Recognized as a site of natural interest by UNESCO and designated as a natural monument by the Government of the Canary Islands, it is part of the Canary Network of Protected Natural Spaces.

The Cueva de Las Palomas cave was created by the volcanic eruption of San Juan Volcano in 1949. It features over 10 openings that allow natural light to illuminate various parts of the path, with some being former fumaroles that once emitted lava and hot sulfurous gases during the tube’s formation. The tube measures approximately 3 meters in width and 560 meters in length. Its scientific significance is primarily geological, further enhanced by its biological importance, as it is home to a unique invertebrate fauna.
