César Manrique and Jesús Soto, in the late 1960s, embarked on a project to create the Art and Tourism Center of Lanzarote, possibly unaware of the global and artistic influence they were about to usher in.
César, a versatile artist who wore many hats, including being a painter, sculptor, monument preservationist, tourist resort designer, landscaper, garden designer, and acclaimed environmentalist, sparked an international trend through his innovative use of volcanic landforms. He successfully merged the realms of Art, Urban Development, and Tourism into a unified idea, all founded on a philosophy and a pattern of urban interaction that prioritized sustainability and respected the ecological significance of the location. This unique approach has since become a globally recognized model.
Without his artistic ingenuity, our Island would definitely be less appealing and characteristically different. Ignoring these Centers and works of art, or failing to appreciate them would be akin to not having visited this place at all. Don’t miss this memorable journey!
