Sailing into the Heart of the Caribbean: A Day on Tradition
When the opportunity arose to sail on Tradition to Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays, I couldn’t resist. With a storied past and promises of pristine waters, this adventure was calling my name.
Setting Sail on Tradition
The sun was just beginning to rise over Sandy Ground as I made my way to the dock, the salty breeze already promising a day of adventure. I was about to embark on a Traditional Sailing Adventure to Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays, a trip that had been on my radar for quite some time. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours on the water, but there’s something uniquely thrilling about setting sail on a vessel with such a storied past. Tradition, built in 1978, was once a sail-trader and rum smuggler, and today, it offers a taste of authentic Caribbean sailing.
Deb, our host for the day, greeted us with a warm smile and a delicious mimosa. As we set off, she shared tales of the vessel’s history, painting a vivid picture of its past life. The gentle rocking of the boat was a familiar sensation, reminiscent of the waves I’ve ridden in countless surf competitions. For those less accustomed to the motion, a bit of Dramamine might be wise, but for me, it was all part of the charm.
Discovering Prickly Pear Cays
The journey to Prickly Pear was nothing short of breathtaking. The water, a mesmerizing shade of blue, stretched out before us, inviting and mysterious. As we approached the cays, the crew handed out snorkel gear and pool noodles, readying us for an underwater adventure. The equipment was simple but effective, and soon I was diving into the crystal-clear waters.
The coral, though damaged by past hurricanes, still held a certain beauty, and the fish darting around were a testament to the resilience of nature. Snorkeling here felt like a dance with the ocean, a reminder of why I fell in love with the sea in the first place. For those who preferred a more leisurely approach, the crew offered dinghy rides to shore, ensuring everyone could enjoy the pristine beaches at their own pace.
A Taste of the Caribbean
Once on shore, the true magic of Prickly Pear revealed itself. The beach was a tranquil paradise, the perfect backdrop for a Caribbean barbecue. The food was a delightful blend of flavors, each bite a celebration of island life. As I sipped on a refreshing rum punch, expertly mixed by Deb, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of contentment.
The sail back to Sandy Ground was a bittersweet affair. The day had flown by, each moment a cherished memory. As we indulged in homemade chocolate chip cookies, the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the water. Deb, ever the gracious host, sent us off with a few extra cookies for the road, a sweet reminder of an unforgettable day.
This adventure was more than just a sailing trip; it was a journey into the heart of the Caribbean, a chance to connect with the ocean in a way that only a traditional vessel like Tradition can offer. For anyone seeking a genuine island experience, this is a must-do.
