Sailing into Paradise: A Day at Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays

When the allure of the Caribbean calls, there’s no better way to answer than with a traditional sailing adventure to Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays. Join me as I recount a day filled with sun, sea, and the timeless charm of island life.

Setting Sail on Tradition

The sun was just beginning to rise over Sandy Ground as I made my way to the pier, the salty breeze already whispering promises of adventure. I was about to embark on a Traditional Sailing Adventure to Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays, a trip that had been on my radar for quite some time. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always had a deep connection with the ocean, and this journey promised to be a perfect blend of relaxation and thrill.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the warm smiles of Laurie and Deb, the crew members who would be our guides for the day. We were ferried to the majestic sloop, Tradition, where a refreshing mimosa awaited us. The boat, a relic of the Caribbean’s sail-trading past, exuded a rustic charm that set the tone for the day. As we set sail, the gentle rocking of the boat and the sound of the waves created a symphony that only the ocean could compose.

Discovering Prickly Pear Cays

The journey to Prickly Pear Cays was a breezy 30-minute sail, with the turquoise waters glistening under the Caribbean sun. As we approached the cays, the vibrant colors of the sea and sky seemed to merge into one, creating a breathtaking panorama. Once anchored, we were free to explore the pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Snorkeling was the first order of business, and while the marine life was not as abundant as I had hoped, the experience of floating in the warm, inviting sea was nothing short of magical. The beach itself was a slice of paradise, with powdery white sand and gentle waves lapping at the shore. I took a leisurely stroll along the beach, savoring the tranquility and beauty of this hidden gem.

Lunch was served at the Prickly Pear Bar & Restaurant, where we indulged in a delicious Caribbean feast. The highlight was undoubtedly the yellow sauce, a tangy delight that perfectly complemented the meal. With our appetites satisfied, we lounged on the beach chairs, sipping on rum punch and soaking in the sun.

The Journey Back

As the afternoon sun began its descent, it was time to head back to Sandy Ground. The return journey was an exhilarating upwind sail, with the wind in our sails and the spray of the sea on our faces. The crew kept us entertained with stories of Tradition’s storied past, and we were treated to homemade chocolate chip cookies and fresh watermelon.

The day ended as it began, with the sun casting its golden glow over the horizon. As we docked back at Sandy Ground, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experience. The Traditional Sailing Adventure had been everything I had hoped for and more—a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and the timeless beauty of the Caribbean. If you’re ever in Anguilla, this is one journey you won’t want to miss.
