Explore Sanchi, situated 30 miles (45 km) northeast of Bhopal. This tranquil hill is adorned with a collection of stupas, monasteries, temples, and pillars dating from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD. Sanchi is a historic pilgrimage site for Buddhists, notable for representing Buddha through symbols rather than figures. The lotus symbolizes Buddha’s birth, the tree his enlightenment, and the wheel his attainment of nirvana (salvation). Buddha’s presence is indicated by footprints and a throne. Sanchi was rediscovered by a British officer in 1818, with significant restoration efforts beginning in 1912.
- Udayagiri Caves - Following the visit to Sanchi, guests will be transported to the Udayagiri Caves (approximately 10 miles/15 km from Sanchi). These caves are an early Hindu ritual site near the Vidisha region, extensively carved and modified under the reign of Chandragupta II, Emperor of the Gupta Empire, during the late 4th and 5th centuries AD. Currently, the caves are a tourist attraction under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India.
Udayagiri features a significant U-shaped plateau adjacent to the River Bes. The caves comprise a series of rock-cut sanctuaries and images carved into the hillside. The depiction of Viṣṇu as the boar-headed Varaha is among the most remarkable artistic sculptures. The site contains important inscriptions from the Gupta dynasty. Additionally, Udayagiri includes rock shelters, petroglyphs, ruined buildings, inscriptions, water systems, fortifications, and habitation mounds, many of which have been only partially excavated.
Guests will be transported back to their hotel, airport, or railway station in Bhopal city to conclude the day.
