Highlights

In the beginning of class there is a brief introduction in Josefina’s home and kitchen. Your recipe selections for the day are based on class size. Classes with 8 students will be cooking the famous Yucatecan dish Cochinita Pibil as the main course (for those that don’t eat pork, substitutions can be made). However, classes tend to run small so you will have more flexibility in what you can cook for the day (limited to 8 students).

Around the prep-table, you will peruse Josefina’s personal recipe book (note: with purchase of this culinary experience the e-cookbook is included - enjoy over 60 personal recipes from Josefina’s home kitchen!) or discuss as a group and decide what to cook as a main dish. Many side dishes will already be pre-selected including how to make handmade tortillas, salsas, guacamole, salads and more!

Following the introduction, you will take a short walk to the local market to pick out some fresh ingredients which you will take back to the house. Not only is her class a fun food thing to do it is also very cultural.
The remaining class time you will prepare your meal which you will enjoy at the end of class (although, don’t worry, Josefina will have some beverages and snacks to get you through the class).

Unusual, thrilling cooking experience - If you're looking for an authentic experience and something a little different from the typical suggestions found online, this cooking class is a must! Our experience started at the local market where Jeronimo greeted us, offered different options of meals to prepare and then took us through the market to select the right ingredients. He carefully selected fresh ingredients from different vendors, had us smell spices, and choose a Mexican candy to try. From there we walked around the corner and sampled tortillas that were handmade in the "factory." We then took a short taxi ride to Jeronimo's home where we met Angie, a lifelong friend. After washing hands we sat at the table and all participated in preparing some of the dried peppers, grinding tomatoes, mixing dough for homemade tortillas, and sampling hibiscus tea, horchata, a variety of dips and salsas, black beans, and mole! Jeronimo was very knowledgeable about the ingredients and processes used to perfect each portion of the dish. We felt like honored guests in Abuela's kitchen and could have imagined a better way to spend our day in Cozumel. Thank you, Jeronimo and Angie for being gracious hosts and sharing your culture and knowldege with us. If we make it back to Cozumel, we will come see you again!

Amazing experience! - We enjoyed the experience. The time at the market was informative. Jeronimo was great! He is very knowledgeable about the benefits of the different fruits and vegetables. There was so much food - so if you go don't eat breakfast! If we're ever back we would definitely do this again.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars - Absolutely loved our cooking class with Jeronimo. He was very informative of the benefits of the foods we were cooking with and other foods in the market we went to. The food was delicious, and lots of it. I had gotten bit by bugs during our stay in Cozumel and they were extremely itchy and swollen. Jeronimo went into his backyard and cut off a peice of Aloe for me to bring back to the condo! You can tell he is very passionate about what he does and loves sharing the knowledge he has. 100% recommended this cooking class, and next time we are in Cozumel we will be taking his class again.

Wonderful, authentic hands-on experience and great value! Highly recommend!!! - We chose this experience based on the description and ratings . . . and it exceeded our wildest expectations. We met our host Jeronimo at the public market, where we spent 30-45 minutes selecting the vegetables, fruit, fish, meat and spices for our meal while Jeronimo explained everything well. Then across the street to a small tortilla maker - really, really cool to see old-school “mass production.” Then in a cab to their home where a table was set for our group of seven. Meal prep was shared - chopping vegetables, cleaning cactus (after careful instruction), mashing avocados - just enough work to feel invested in the outcome - while enjoying delicious hibiscus tea. Then we each made a tortilla by hand, which went on the hot grill with cheese as an appetizer. While we were busy with the above, Jeronimo was making guacamole and shrimp ceviche plus several sauces - a pepita, a green and a red - which we also enjoyed with chips. Then came the main course, Tacos Al pastor accompanied by prickly pear cactus lemonade. Delicious, more than we could possibly eat, and followed by a celebratory margarita. We could not recommend Cozumel Cooking Class more highly. It will be one of our fondest memories of our Cozumel stay.
