From Waves to Volcanoes: A Day in Costa Rica’s Heartland
Trading surfboards for hiking boots, my wife and I embarked on a full-day tour to the Arenal Volcano. From coffee plantations to hot springs, join us as we explore the heart of Costa Rica.
A Journey Through Costa Rica’s Heart
The day began with the sun peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow over San José. My wife and I, always on the lookout for new adventures, decided to take a break from the waves and explore the lush landscapes of Costa Rica’s interior. Our destination? The majestic Arenal Volcano, a towering presence that promised a day filled with discovery and relaxation.
Our guide, Alex, greeted us with a warm smile and a promise of a day to remember. As we set off, the scenic route to Arenal unfolded before us, revealing a tapestry of farms, rainforests, and quaint towns. Our first stop was a coffee plantation, where the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans filled the air. As a surfer, I’m used to early mornings, and a good cup of coffee is essential. Here, we learned about the intricate process of coffee production, from bean to cup, and sampled some of the finest brews Costa Rica has to offer.
Nature’s Wonders and Culinary Delights
The journey continued to the La Paz Waterfall, a breathtaking cascade surrounded by vibrant rainforest. Alex, ever the entertainer, snapped photos of us with our mouths open, pretending to catch the waterfall’s flow. It was a lighthearted moment that captured the essence of the day—fun, laughter, and a deep appreciation for nature’s beauty.
Next, we visited a hummingbird station, where the air buzzed with the rapid flutter of wings. Here, we were treated to a unique beverage—hot sugar cane juice with a splash of tangerine lemonade. The combination was unexpectedly delightful, a sweet and tangy refreshment that paired perfectly with the queso tortilla, a corn-based treat topped with sour cream.
Lunch in La Fortuna was a feast for the senses. I opted for the Chifrijo, a hearty bowl of rice, beans, fried pork, tortilla chips, and avocado. It was a dish that mirrored the vibrant flavors of Costa Rica, each bite a reminder of the country’s rich culinary heritage.
Soaking in Serenity
As the afternoon sun began to wane, we arrived at the Paradise Hot Springs. Nestled in lush gardens, the hot springs offered a serene escape from the day’s adventures. My wife and I rolled up our pants and dipped our feet into the warm, mineral-rich waters, letting the soothing heat wash over us. It was a moment of pure relaxation, a chance to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences.
The day concluded with a delicious dinner, a fitting end to a journey that had taken us through the heart of Costa Rica. As we made our way back to San José, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country beyond its famous surf spots. The Arenal Volcano tour was a reminder that adventure awaits around every corner, and sometimes, the best waves are found not in the ocean, but in the experiences we share with those we love.
Pura vida, my friends, until the next adventure!
