From Surf to Summit: Exploring Costa Rica’s Volcanic Wonders
When the waves take a backseat, the call of Costa Rica’s lush landscapes and volcanic wonders beckon. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a day of exploration at Poás Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where nature’s beauty knows no bounds.
A Journey Through Coffee and Clouds
As a nomadic surfer, my life is usually dictated by the tides and the promise of the next perfect wave. But every now and then, I find myself drawn inland, away from the salty embrace of the ocean, to explore the wonders that lie beyond the shoreline. This time, it was the allure of the Poás Volcano and the lush La Paz Waterfall Gardens that called me away from the coast.
The day began with a drive through the coffee lands of San Isidro, a region that boasts some of the finest coffee plantations in Costa Rica. Our guide, Olman, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing stories of the region’s rich coffee history as we meandered through the verdant landscape. The air was thick with the aroma of freshly roasted beans, and I couldn’t resist the temptation to indulge in a steaming cup of the local brew. As I sipped, I marveled at the dedication and passion that goes into every cup, much like the dedication surfers have for finding the perfect wave.
The Mystical Poás Volcano
Our journey continued to the Poás Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s seven active volcanoes. The skies were overcast, casting a mystical veil over the landscape. Olman, ever the optimist, suggested we wait out the clouds, and I’m glad we did. As the mist began to lift, the crater revealed itself in all its glory, a testament to the raw power of nature. The experience was humbling, reminding me of the ocean’s own unpredictable nature.
We hiked to the Botos Lagoon, a serene body of water nestled within the volcanic landscape. The trails around the volcano offered a chance to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the area, with Olman pointing out the unique flora and fauna that call this place home. It was a stark contrast to the coastal landscapes I’m accustomed to, yet equally captivating.
Enchantment at La Paz Waterfall Gardens
The final leg of our journey took us to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a place that truly exceeded all expectations. The gardens are a sanctuary for over 100 rescued animal species, including sloths, jaguars, and toucans. As a lover of nature, I was in awe of the diversity and beauty of the wildlife.
The waterfalls themselves were a sight to behold, each one more breathtaking than the last. The sound of cascading water was a soothing symphony, reminiscent of the waves crashing on the shore. We were given ample time to explore and take in the scenery, with Olman capturing the moments with his camera, ensuring we had memories to cherish long after the day was over.
As the day came to a close, I reflected on the experience. It was a reminder that while the ocean will always be my first love, there is a world of wonder waiting to be discovered beyond the waves. The Poás Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens are a testament to the beauty and diversity of Costa Rica, a country that never ceases to amaze me. If you find yourself in San José Province, I highly recommend taking the time to explore these natural wonders. You won’t be disappointed.
