From Surf to Springs: A Day at Arenal Volcano

When the waves take a backseat, the lush landscapes of Costa Rica beckon. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a day of coffee tasting, waterfall gazing, and hot spring relaxation at the Arenal Volcano.

A Journey Through Coffee and Waterfalls

The day began with the sun barely peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow over San José. My wife and I, always on the lookout for new adventures, decided to take a break from the waves and explore the lush landscapes of Costa Rica’s interior. Our destination? The Arenal Volcano, a majestic sight that promised a day filled with nature’s wonders.

Our first stop was a coffee plantation, a place that felt like a hidden gem nestled among the rolling hills. Harlem, our guide, greeted us with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm for coffee. As a surfer, I’m used to early mornings and the need for a good cup of coffee, but this was something else. Harlem walked us through the entire coffee-making process, from the ripe cherries to the aromatic brew. The highlight was, of course, tasting the freshly brewed coffee, a rich and flavorful experience that set the tone for the day.

With caffeine coursing through our veins, we continued our journey to the La Paz Waterfall. The sound of cascading water greeted us long before we saw it, a symphony of nature that was both soothing and invigorating. We took our time here, capturing the beauty of the waterfall and the surrounding rainforest. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a reminder of the natural beauty that Costa Rica has to offer.

Wildlife Encounters and Cultural Insights

Our next stop was a quaint café where we were treated to the sight of hummingbirds flitting about, their iridescent feathers catching the light. It was a magical moment, one that felt like a scene from a nature documentary. We sipped on complimentary drinks, savoring the flavors and the serene atmosphere.

The day continued with a visit to the iguana center, a place teeming with these fascinating creatures. Seeing them up close, lounging in the trees, was a unique experience that added a touch of the unexpected to our day. Lunch followed, and as vegetarians, we were delighted by the thoughtful and delicious meal prepared for us. It’s always a pleasure to find places that cater to our dietary preferences, and this was no exception.

In the afternoon, we had the opportunity to learn about the Maleku tribe. While the visit was brief, it offered a glimpse into their rich culture and traditions. As someone who thrives on learning about different cultures, I found it intriguing, though I wished we had more time to delve deeper.

Relaxation at the Hot Springs

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the visit to the Paradise Hot Springs. After a day of exploration, soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters was the perfect way to unwind. The view of the Arenal Volcano in the background was nothing short of spectacular, a reminder of the powerful forces of nature that shaped this land.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we enjoyed a delicious dinner, reflecting on the day’s adventures. Our guide, Harlem, and driver, Carlos, were exceptional, ensuring that every moment was enjoyable and comfortable. Their professionalism and passion for their work shone through, making the long journey feel like a breeze.

This day tour was a beautiful reminder of the diverse experiences Costa Rica has to offer, beyond its stunning beaches and surf spots. It’s a place where nature, culture, and relaxation come together in perfect harmony. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend taking a break from the waves and embarking on this unforgettable journey. Arenal Adventure
