Highlights

Grab your passport, and meet your local guide upon pickup from your San Ignacio hotel in the morning. Your tour begins with an approximate 1.5-hour drive to Tikal National Park, located in Guatemala. Aboard your comfortable coach you’ll cross over the border hassle-free.

The ruins of more than 3,000 palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, ball courts, and plazas dot this UNESCO World Heritage Site that once served as a religious, social, and political hub for the Mayan people. Throughout your visit, your guide shares historical background on the ancient kingdom. Head to Complex Q and R, where you’ll see twin pyramids with altars set in front of the temples.

Visit the Central Acropolis, a maze of courtyards and smaller temples. Gaze in awe at the Great Plaza, and see the Temple of the Grand Jaguar, which was built to honor and bury King Moon Double Comb. Here, three rooms are located inside the 144-foot (44-meter) temple. Take in the sight of Temple IV (the Double Head Serpent), Tikal’s tallest structure at 212 feet (64 meters) high. The intriguing Temple II, commonly known as the Temple of the Masks, also sits in this part of the park near the Great Plaza.

Enjoy a delicious lunch in Tikal National Park before you explore the ruins on your own. Afterward, your guide transports you back to Belize with drop-off at your hotel in San Ignacio.

Great tour and excellent tour company - We had an excellent day touring with Belize Caving Expeditions company. The local Belize driver picked us up, two parents and two teen kids, promptly at the arranged time from our hotel, and drove us to the Belize-Guatemalan border where the Guatemalan tour guide and driver picked us up. The Guatemalan guide spoke good English and was able to tell us everything that we would be doing during the day in touring Tikal, the fascinating Mayan ruins. We stopped for a relaxed coffee on the way, where the driver showed us a large 3D diorama of Tikal which was very helpful to visualize what would see. We were very comfortable on our ride and well informed. At the ruins the guide took us to all the key points to see and was patient with our two kids who wanted to explore somewhat independently😀. After touring for a couple of hours we began the drive back to the Belize border. We stopped on the way for a simple but satisfying lunch. We got to the border and passed with ease, but after getting back to our Belize hotel we realized that we had left behind in the touring van a fancy soccer ball which we had purchased in Guatemala when we had coffee. We couldn’t re-cross the border to get it, but we were able to arrange delivering it to us at the Belize City airport to coordinate with our flight back home to New York. Belize Caving Expeditions staff were highly efficient and so kind, keeping us posted every step of the way about our kid’s soccer ball. The whole experience was first rate, and we were very satisfied. We can highly recommend them.

Great tour and worth the trip. - We had an amazing trip. Luis our guide was very knowledgeable. His passion for the sacredness of Tikal and the Mayan people was inspiring. Couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Transportation from San Ignacio through border of Guatemala to Tikal was great. The collaboration of the people in Belize and the people in Guatemala was seamless. If you can bring small USD bills with you. They will change your Belize dollars to Guatemalan Quetzal at the boarder. If you have any left over when you return they will change it back for a lesser exchange rate. USD works in both countries. I used the QuetzalI I was given as change for gratuity to our guide/driver in Guatemala. It was hot the day we went 41c/106f. Bring water, a hat and a hand fan. I brought a light long sleeve UV shirt. It was a game changer. There was a good amount of shade you could stop in and get breaks from the sun if needed. There are places to stop for snacks, water and other drinks in the park. I would suggest bring some snacks or plan on buying some. We didn’t get to our lunch spot until 3pm and our pick up was at 730am. There are plenty of opportunities for snacks along the day. Just not a proper meal until after the park. Lunch was good. Options were grilled chicken, chicken fajitas or vegetarian. Comes with rice, beans, pico corn tortillas. Veg comes with sautéed veggies, guacamole plus same sides. Wish we had more time to explore. It is a huge park. Staying in the park and having a few days to explore would be nice. Amazing place and looking forward to returning.

We can’t say enough good things about Marco, our guide. - Our tour guide Marco was amazing and we learned so much. We can’t recommend him, the driver Luis or the experience enough. We will be back to keep exploring.

Amazing day exploring Tikal! - I’ll start with our tour guide Sergio, he was extremely knowledgeable with all the information provided and very personable. He didn’t push us to go above our limits (there was a lot of walking and stair climbing) and brought on his humor alongside! The tour was an extremely long day filled with knowledge and walking, but it was so worth it. Be sure to take plenty of water, eat a good breakfast (or bring light snacks if you’re a snacker), and wear comfortable shoes because you will walk! It was surreal seeing all the preserved history and being able to walk up some of them! We had an amazing time getting to know the other participants of this tour! If you can spare an entire day, do this tour.

Make Tikal a priority! - Incredible tour with amazing staff in both Belize & Guatemala! The ruins were not crowded and the lunch at a local Guatemalan restaurant was delicious. So glad we made this a priority while in Belize. We were away from our hotel for a total of 13 hours. Plan for an all day outing.

Adventurous, knowledgeable, and fun - Pros: Tikal was incredible, and the drivers and guides were wonderful. Also transfer at the border was easy! Cons: I was not prepared to walk 7+ miles in the Guatemalan jungle and suffered heat exhaustion due to the temperature, and lack of water. Don't be like me and bring a large water bottle, breathable clothing, and tennis/ hiking shoes!

Great Visit - Our guide was EXCELLENT but the tour felt rushed. I knew that it was three hours but that seemed too short after experiencing it.

Great tour but a full day commitment! - It was a great trip. For context, I am traveling solo and it’s my first time in Belize. Pro - good communication. They said they had to cancel the trip if it was a solo departure. So I texted them on What’s app and they were very quick to respond. - The pick up van arrived at 7:15 which gave me 15 min extra time to get ready. It worked out - lunch and dinner are quite nice. They did offer water but I would still bring plenty. - The hiking wasn’t too much, I dont do any cardio but I was able to make it it’s all under 10min hike - This would be a fabulous tour for bird lovers. The guide was very knowledgeable about birds and the wild life. - ice cold wet towel upon coming back to the van was such a treat! - Border crossing was easy and well communicated. - the drive on the GUATAMALA side was so peaceful and pretty. I unexpectedly enjoyed the 2 hour ride. Con - the Belize company car could be a little cleaner. I’m not saying them to get a new car, but seats were dirty and made me uncomfortable to sit in the front. - GUATAMALA company tour guide, while he was nice, seemed more knowledgeable about the wild life than the Mayan itself, I would’ve personally loved to hear about how Mayans lived more. - I feel as though it could’ve been more well thought out in terms of the picture opportunities. More photo ops of the temple 4 or at the square would have been great. Overall, I recommend this trip! If you are not tooo into Mayan culture though may be doing a smaller Mayan ruins that couples water activity might be more bang for the buck. It is a full day commitment, I left at 7:15 and came back at 6:30 at night!
