Highlights
  • Legion of Honor - With your admission ticket in hand, head to the California Palace of the Legion of Honor (known informally as the Legion of Honor), located in Lincoln Park overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, where the Pacific spills into San Francisco Bay. A gift of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels to the city of San Francisco in the early 1900s, this stunning building is a replica of the Palais de la Légion d’Honneur along the Seine in Paris, and its epic location makes this hidden gem one of the city’s greatest treasures.

Explore the museum’s extensive collection of more than 124,000 works of art, including European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts; ancient art from the Mediterranean basin; and the largest collection of works on paper in the American West. The permanent collection reflects a history of patronage by its founders, whose focus was 18th- and 19th-century French art.

Don’t miss one of the 28 original casts of Rodin’s The Thinker statue and the must-see Salon Doré of the Hôtel de la Trémoille exhibit, reopening in the fall of 2013. This is one of the finest examples of French neoclassical interior architecture in the world.

Be sure to bring your camera, because after your time at the museum, you can walk a bit down the road for incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands in the distance.

Fabulous! - I am a native San Franciscan and have visited The Legion of Honour since I was in a stroller! At 74 years young, I’m still in awe of this wonderful magical place, where time stands still for me with overflowing memories.

a wonderful little museum - a variety of works, all periods, not too many people - especially a RODIN collection which would be the largest (??? and the Rodin museum in Paris!?) be careful, very few buses to leave the museum, Uber/taxi essential

Legion Visit - We went for the John Singer Sargent exhibit and enjoyed that very much. But, I still LOVE the resident exhibits at the Legion. Always comforting to see Bouguereau’s The Broken Pitcher and Makovsky’s, Russian Bride…

Don’t miss this Rodin collection - We enjoyed visiting this museum. It’s a perfect size without being overwhelming. The Rodin collection is amazing and there are some beautiful paintings to see. The pottery/porcelain is beautiful but there’s a lot. A great half day activity in a lovely location with a nice little cafe.

To crowded to comfortably... - To crowded to comfortably view! Plus, I was charged twice $30.00 for general admission and the Sergeant in Spain. I only wanted to see Sergeant in Spain. Probably not.

DON’T PARK AT THE LEGION OF HONOR - The museum was very good, as usual. Always enjoy their Rodin collection especially. But was very disappointed to go back to the car and find a window punched out. Ours was one of several. We’ve lived in the Bay Area for a long time, so that kind of activity isn’t new, but in this case the only parking for the museum is their surface lot - thieves obviously know that people will leave their car unattended for several hours. Even though there was nothing in the vehicle (and therefore nothing taken) we still have to deal the the damage costs to the rental car our family had. The museums staff was kind of cavalier about our experience, so I assume they are unlikely to add any security to their lot. BOTTOM LINE - IF YOU WANT TO VISIT THE LEGION OF HONOR MUSEUM DO NOT PARK THERE - take a ride share, taxi or the bus.

Bad service / treatment - The legion of honor museum would not accept the tickets that I bought through your website, and it was quite embarrassing, insinuating it was fake and they don’t work with TripAdvisor. Not a pleasant experience at all.
