A very unique experience!... - A very unique experience! This was a really fun and different way to experience the area. If you are okay with bugs/bats- this is a great option!
Our guide was very knowledgeable and helped us through the different options through the cave. He was very encouraging but didn’t push us too hard to try the optional activities. Be ready to get wet and do some light climbing! This cave has a river running through it so you will get wet up to your knees at least.
I particularly enjoyed crawling through tunnel that had the river running through it!
The treats offered at the end was a great touch :)

Very cool cave experience - This was such a cool experience - it was not just walking into a cave, you go on an amazing 2 hour tour of tunnels, rivers, tight spaces, and some climbing. You will get wet, so bring extra clothes (there are showers) and a dry bag to hold your phone if you want to bring it in. There are big spiders but only at the edge of the cave, and bats are everywhere inside. Our guide, Mauricio, was very knowledgeable, friendly, and funny. I enjoyed this adventure a lot!

Underground Adventure - This was such a fascinating and unique experience! We did the Venado Caves Underground Tour from La Fortuna, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The caves are absolutely beautiful and full of adventure—we crawled through tight spaces (optional, but highly recommended!) and learned so much from our knowledgeable guide. It’s not for the claustrophobic, but they do offer alternate paths, which is thoughtful.
They provide rain boots on-site, which is super convenient, but definitely bring your own socks. Just know: your feet will get soaked—those boots are wide at the top, so water splashes in and they get a little heavy. Still worth it. I’d also recommend leggings, long sleeves, and water-resistant shoes if you skip the boots.
Afterward, there are showers on site and they provide towels and a delicious fruit platter. Bring a change of clothes in a bag and a waterproof lanyard for your phone if you want pics!
The only downside? After the tour, my friend and I just wanted a hot cup of black coffee. It was $3 total, but they wouldn’t run our card for that amount, and the whole ordeal to get change turned into a weird hassle. A simple “cash only” sign or minimum card charge option would've helped. Honestly, it was frustrating but that aside, the tour itself was absolutely worth it!

Our favorite tour! - Diego was an amazing tour guide! The caves were very interesting and we appreciated that they care about safety when it came to our health and the bats! We saw a lot of wildlife and monkeys outside of the cave as well. The experience was really good! The driver was also very kind and spotted a sloth for us!

Fun, low-commitment caving. - The trip was very fun. Andres, our guide, was terrific. Very informative and conscientious. He took excellent care of my friend who was apprehensive. The drive to and fro was great, because Andres gave us geology and biology lessons on Costa RIca. He also found us toucans, poison dart frogs, and a giant scorpion spider! We also appreciated the cold beer at the end! ;)
Be aware: Just to be safe and smart, the tour company asks us to wear masks to avoid inhaling anything.

If you want an adventure, this is a perfect tour for you! - My husband, my two 7-year-old boys, and I went on this excursion in February 2025. We were paired with another family of 4 and our guide, Diego. Let me just say, this tour is NO JOKE. Even if you bypass the optional tight squeeze spots (we didn't), it was an extremely dirty, wet, physical journey through these beautiful caves for about 2 hours. Think crawling on all fours through a foot of dirty, flowing water and squeezing under and through limestone rock covered in bat guano! That said, it was a fantastic experience and Diego was a wonderful guide. He assisted and coached us and our boys through every step of the journey and even took care of a coral snake (highly venomous) on the path. The site provided helmets, rubber boots, masks, and headlamps (children's sizes too!). Afterwards, the facilities had showers and the tour had towels and a snack of cookies, fruit, and drinks for us (beer for the adults!). Definitely bring a change of clothes. We honestly just threw our clothes out before our showers. They were soaked and filthy, but we had planned for that so we didn't mind! BOTTOM LINE: If you want a true adventure and you plan accordingly, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience well worth having.

Awesome experience! - The tour of Venado cave was excellent! The drive from the meetup location to the cave was about an hour and we even stopped to see a sloth on the way! Our guide and driver Andres was excellent! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the cave, as well as, plants and wildlife in the area. You walk through water in most areas of the cave. Rubber boots are available (no charge) if you want them, but water shoes worked great. You are given a disposable mask to wear in the cave to prevent breathing in bat poop. You are required to shower afterwards, so bring a change of clothes. They do provide towels.

Windy road, as usual - My son got carsick on the way up so two of us stayed on the surface during the 90 minute tour. But my wife loved it. Lesson, even with meclazine and also a drive through the clud forest under his belt with no motion sickness, make sure you keep your eyes on the front of the road when driving through CR if youre susceptible to motion sickness.
