Additional Information

This exploration emphasizes the African heritage in Cartagena and Colombia, underscoring the Afro-descendant community’s impact on music, dance, culinary practices, sports, and the historical narrative of our city and nation. Palenque, the first free town on the American continent since 1713, is a focal point. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the residences of influential community members, engage with them, and hear firsthand accounts of their living history. A music and dance performance, in which you also play a role, will offer a glimpse into the local cultural practices. You’ll cap off the experience with a taste of Palenque cuisine. The community earned a UNESCO designation in 2005 as an Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, thanks to their preservation of African traditions such as the Palenquera language, religious rituals, traditional medicine, music, and dance.

A truly amazing tour. - This was an amazing, information filled tour that not only captured the African legacy of Palenque, but the parts of its history that are connected to Cartagena and other parts of Colombia as well. The people of Palenque were very welcoming and happy to share their culture and homes with us and we truly respected and appreciated them. Lunch was very tasty and a traditional meal we were happy to take part in.
