Antigua Guatemala, once the third largest city in all of Spanish Colonial America and the capital of Guatemala for 200 years, is now a serene, beautiful, and partially restored colonial city. Cobblestone streets meander through the city, lined with majestic churches and monasteries.
- Iglesia de La Merced - La Merced Church, showcasing Guatemalan Ultrabaroque style, features two bell towers. On the church’s facade, at the top, is a sculpture of San Pedro Nolasco, the founder of the Mercedarian Order.
- Arco de Santa Catalina - The Santa Catalina Arch was constructed to connect the nuns between cloisters, allowing them to remain unseen due to the vows taken by members of that Order. After the earthquakes of 1773, the arch gained significance due to renovations, which included the addition of a turret and a Lamy Amp Lacroix clock of French origin.
- The Plaza Central Park - Central Park is laid out in the traditional grid pattern commonly used in urban planning in the Spanish colonies. The park is surrounded by the Palace of the General Captains, the Town Hall, the Cathedral of San Jose, and the Trade Portal.
In the park, visitors will also find the Las Sirenas fountain. According to tradition, the Count of La Gomera ordered the fountain’s construction in memory of his daughters, who, after giving birth, refused to breastfeed their children. As a result, the count ordered them to be tied to a trunk in the center of a waterhole, where they perished from thirst and hunger.
- Tanque de la Union - La Union tank is one of the city’s most iconic laundries. Only large houses had private washing facilities, so most residents, particularly housewives, used public laundries. This facility was inaugurated on February 3, 1853.
