The magnificent Green Grotto Caves, situated in Discovery Bay, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, rank among the island’s top attractions. The caves are named after the distinctive green algae that adorn their walls. Historical records indicate that the Taino Indians initially used the caves for shelter, as evidenced by the discovery of cave paintings and pottery fragments. Runaway slaves found refuge here while evading their masters. During the British Invasion in 1665, the Spanish used the caves as a hideout, and smugglers later utilized them to transport arms to Cuba, facilitated by a tunnel leading to the beach. Towards the end of World War II, the Jamaican government used the cave entrance to store rum barrels.
