This site’s primary attraction is the sizeable and complex limestone cavern, rich in rock formations including stalactites, stalagmites and numerous overhead crevices. The guide provides an engaging narration about the cave’s storied past and different uses over time. Artwork on the cave walls, alongside discovered tools and pottery shards, paints a picture of the cave’s first known dwellers - the Taino Indians who likely sought refuge in the caves. Later, when the British invaded Jamaica in 1655, the Spanish colonists hid in caves to evade capture. The site boasts an underwater tunnel connecting the caves to Runaway Bay’s sandy beach, through which the Spanish are speculated to have used in their escape attempt to Cuba. The caves have been known to serve as hideouts for runaway slaves as well.
