Highlights
  • Wild About Lapland - You will head away from Rovaniemi to find the perfect peaceful place to start your trip. Before heading into the forests, you will be given some instructions on how to walk with the snowshoes. As you snowshoe through the quiet snowy landscapes, you will already feel the harmony of Lapland nature that surrounds you.

Soon you will end up on the frozen expanse of a lake. It is time to find a promising spot to try to catch your lunch! Your guide will help you drill your hole in the ice, and will teach you the basic techniques of how to ice fish. Then, it is just a matter of time and patience before you can feel the first bite of the fish!

While you are fishing, your guide will prepare a fire on the shore of the lake for you. Some typical Finnish snacks and hot drinks will be waiting for you around the fire. If you manage to catch a fish (of a decent size), your guide will happily prepare it, cook it straight over the fire and add it to the menu of the day! If the fish are undersized, we will quickly return them to the lake without unnecessarily harming them.

After this ice fishing experience, it will be time to put back on the snowshoes and head back to Rovaniemi!

Additional Information

This experience allows you to immerse yourself in the best that Lapland’s outdoors have to offer - an invigorating snowshoe hike through the woods and a tranquil ice-fishing session on a vast, frozen lake.

For all our adventures, we maintain a maximum of 8 participants per group. This is crucial for us to deliver an unparalleled experience, steering clear of mass tourism. By doing so, your guide can familiarize themselves with you more intimately, addressing your needs and responding to your queries efficiently. Furthermore, with regards to ice-fishing, we restrict the group size to conserve the serene solitude of Lapland’s natural environment. As the saying goes - the smaller the gang, the larger the experience!

Great tour at -35 degrees in the winter landscape - A lovely winter excursion with 8 participants plus guide Bozo. The group size is - as always with Wild About Lapland - to be emphasized, because in a small group of max. 8 people plus guide it is much more personal and individual (no mass processing, as we experienced with another operator with 20 to 40 people [booked through the travel agency]). The snowshoe hike was a great experience, where we simply "walked" between the trees on our own. Here the effect of nature in temperatures below minus 30 degrees is added. The view of the large frozen lake was unique and is recommended. The ice fishing (each pair drills its own hole) was a nice change, and Bozo took photos of us - these photos with the winter background (wide view with hints of sunrise) will stay with us for a lifetime. Unfortunately we didn't catch anything, but we didn't expect that either. Unfortunately we forgot to follow Bozo's advice: put your fingers in the water! That would certainly have been an irritating experience, as the liquid water has a temperature of at least +3 degrees, while the ambient temperature was -35 degrees. So we have to repeat the tour. :-) At the end we sat in a tent by the campfire, Bozo entertained us well and we grilled and ate sausages together. We were also able to ask questions on this trip, which were answered openly and in a friendly manner. Again, a very personal and friendly tour. Thank you very much! We would/will happily go on tour with this operator again at any time. Thank you very much for your extraordinary commitment, starting with the reception in the local office (including your dog Duke, who is just cuddly) and before and during the tours - that is really remarkable!

Unique Winter Escape - This is definitely what you are looking for if you want a unique winter experience. Wild About Lapland is focused on small groups which will make your experience more memorable. Our guide, Božo, was also amazing. He made sure that we have engaged with each other while sitting next to the fire, grilling sausages, having a hot cup of drink and of course, cookies. Definitely one for the books!

Very unique experience - Definitely a very unique experience but probably more like once in a life time event. Given we came in April, tourist season was almost over. Because of that, the guide said the private park the company normally rents is no longer available so we went to a public park with no indoor facility to warm up, which is probably the key factor in giving this less and a 5 star. While small group tours are generally nice, being alone for this tour was a bit lonely. Snow shoe was really interesting. Even with the snow shoe we sometimes sunk knee deep but without we would probably be waist deep. You never know where you’re going to land and falling is part of the fun. As for ice fishing, we came on a heavy wind and heavy snow day. Even with their overalls it was still very hard to sit still. Thank goodness for face masks in this instance. Also we were probably not there long enough in a quiet state to catch anything so it is definitely more for the experience. I would say definitely don’t expect to catch anything especially anything significantly large to eat haha.

Was nice doing... - Was nice doing snowshoeing on the lake while no one except our small group was there. Ice fishing was also fun even if none of us caught a fish.

Fishing activity without racket - Nice fishing activity, but there is no snowshoe hiking as indicated in the advertisement. Small wood fire under teepee to warm up after the activity
