- Vatican Museums - The Vatican Museums’ origins can be traced to a single marble sculpture acquired in the 16th century: Laocoön and His Sons. Discovered on January 14, 1506, in a vineyard near the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome, Pope Julius II sent Giuliano da Sangallo and Michelangelo, who worked for the Vatican, to examine the find. On their recommendation, the Pope purchased the sculpture from the vineyard owner. Exactly one month after its discovery, the Pope showcased the sculpture at the Vatican for public viewing. It illustrates the Trojan priest Laocoön and his sons, Antiphantes and Thymbraeus, being attacked by giant serpents. In 1854, Pius established the Lateran Museum by decree, incorporating some Vatican collections, while Benedict founded the Museum Christianum.
In October 2006, the permanent public opening of a Vatican Hill necropolis’ excavations was part of the museums’ 500th-anniversary celebrations.
- Cortile della Pigna - The Pinecone Courtyard at the Vatican Museums is a tranquil haven where classical design blends with lush greenery. At its center stands the impressive bronze Pigna statue, often attributed to Donato Bramante, symbolizing both artistic and historical significance. This peaceful area invites visitors to pause, reflect, and appreciate the perfect fusion of cultural heritage and aesthetic beauty.
- Sphere within a Sphere - Prominently located in the Cortile della Pigna at the Vatican Museums, Sfera con Sfera (Sphere within a Sphere) is a mesmerizing bronze sculpture by renowned Italian artist Arnaldo Pomodoro. Featuring two concentric spheres with fragmented surfaces that reveal intricate inner workings reminiscent of mechanical cogs, the piece serves as a powerful metaphor for the modern world’s complexity and fragility. First conceived in the early 1960s, Pomodoro’s ongoing series of spherical sculptures explores the interplay between progress and disintegration, emphasizing the inner tensions and delicate balance that characterize contemporary global systems.
- Gallery Of The Maps - The Gallery of Maps presents a captivating blend of artistic expression and scientific knowledge, showcasing elaborate cartographic frescoes that depict Italy’s 16th-century geography. This remarkable hall takes visitors on a historical journey, displaying vivid and intricately painted regional maps that combine aesthetic mastery with exceptional geographic accuracy.
- Sistine Chapel - After exploring the Vatican Museums’ extraordinary halls, visitors are led into the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel—an intimate papal sanctuary and a pinnacle of Renaissance art. Overhead, Michelangelo’s legendary ceiling unfolds, with The Creation of Adam capturing the iconic moment of divine spark. Dominating the altar wall, The Last Judgement captivates with its dramatic vision of the final reckoning. More than just a museum highlight, this revered chapel offers a profound and unforgettable encounter with Michelangelo’s artistic genius.
