- Ludus Magnus - After leaving San Pietro in Vincoli, continue to explore the ruins of the Ludus Magnus, an ancient gladiator training school located on the northeast side of the Colosseum. This visit includes entry into the most significant gladiator gym, the Ludus Magnus, constructed by Emperor Domitian at the end of the 1st century A.D. The structure, made entirely of brick, was a rectangular building, likely with three floors, featuring a large porticoed courtyard at its center. Surrounding the courtyard were a series of rectangular rooms designed to accommodate the gladiators. A distinctive feature is the presence of a miniature amphitheater in the courtyard, intended for gladiator training. After approximately half an hour, the tour will proceed towards San Clemente.
- Basilica of San Clemente - The final stop is the Basilica of San Clemente al Laterano, located on Via San Giovanni. This extraordinary site showcases three layers of Rome’s history: a 12th-century basilica built over a 4th-century church, which itself was constructed atop a Roman-era villa from the Republican period. Beneath these are early Christian and medieval layers, as well as a Mithraeum, offering a unique glimpse into Rome’s spiritual and architectural evolution.
Choose between two exploration options:
Private Guided Tour: A licensed, English-speaking guide will lead visitors through all three underground levels, providing insights into the site’s religious and archaeological significance. This option also includes visits to San Pietro in Vincoli and the Ludus Magnus, with all entrance tickets included.
Self-Guided Audio Tour: Discover San Clemente at your own pace with a multilingual audio guide app (English, Italian, Spanish, French, German), offering access to all three levels of content.
- San Pietro in Vincoli - Start the journey near the Colosseum and enjoy a pleasant walk through the surrounding neighborhood. In a charming little piazza off Via Cavour, the church of San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains) can be found. The church holds a significant relic, the two sets of chains that bound St. Peter during his imprisonment in Jerusalem and Rome. The highlight of this church is undoubtedly Michelangelo’s statue of Moses, an unfinished masterpiece by the Renaissance genius, originally intended to be part of the tomb of Pope Julius II. The original plans included a grand funeral monument with 47 statues, but it was never completed due to Michelangelo’s other commitments.
