- Tempio di Portuno - The Temple of Portunus is an ancient Roman temple beside the Forum Boarium, the Roman cattle market linked with Hercules, near Rome’s oldest river port. It was likely dedicated to the gateway god Portunus and is one of the best-preserved Roman temples.

The square’s history is closely tied to the imposing Palazzo Farnese, beginning in the 16th century when Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (later Pope Paul III) acquired and demolished several houses to create a space for a new refined residence. Its construction involved some of the era’s most prominent Italian architects, including Michelangelo.
