Garbatella is a unique architectural vista, founded as a low-income suburb in the 1920s. Throughout the decades, it has preserved a spirited and authentic identity while adapting into a vibrant and lively spot. The area features distinctive palaces constructed in the Roman Baroque architectural style, unwontedly open courtyards, streetways overflowing with vegetation, urban farms, inviting cafés in the squares, partisan plaques, and catacombs. These elements all contribute to its status as one of Rome’s few remaining authentic districts. During my tailored guided tours, I discuss Garbatella’s origins and history, visit the standout buildings, the urban farms, and cultural clubs, and end at the Casetta Rossa, the base of a social and cultural group where guests are welcome to wrap up their tour with a coffee or wine.
