A Journey of Transformation: Embracing La Guajira’s Culture and Wildlife
Drawn by the promise of a transformative experience, I embarked on The Wellbeing Route in La Guajira. This journey offered not only breathtaking landscapes but also the chance to make a meaningful impact on local communities and wildlife.
Arrival at Casa Anawa: A Warm Welcome
As I stepped off the plane in Riohacha, the anticipation of embarking on The Wellbeing Route filled me with excitement. The journey to Casa Anawa, the heart of this transformative project, was a scenic drive through the vibrant landscapes of La Guajira. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a chorus of barks and wagging tails from the rescued dogs that call this place home. Their eyes, filled with gratitude and love, were a testament to the incredible work being done here.
The warmth of the people at Casa Anawa was equally heartening. It felt like coming home to a family I never knew I had. The air-conditioned rooms were a welcome respite from the tropical heat, and the communal spaces buzzed with laughter and camaraderie. As I settled in, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of belonging, as if I was part of something much larger than myself.
A Day of Purpose: Caring for Animals
The next morning, I awoke to the sound of birds chirping and the gentle rustle of leaves. After a hearty breakfast, we set out on the Wellbeing Route, a journey that promised not only adventure but also a chance to make a tangible difference. Our first stop was a veterinary care day, where I had the opportunity to assist in providing much-needed medical attention to animals in the community.
Witnessing the dedication of the local volunteers and the gratitude of the community was a humbling experience. Despite having so little, the people of La Guajira were willing to share what they had to help these vulnerable creatures. It was a powerful reminder of the joy that comes from giving, a sentiment that resonated deeply with my own values as a conservationist.
Connecting with the Wayuu: A Cultural Exchange
In the afternoon, we participated in the “Smile and Learn” program, engaging with the Wayuu children through workshops and creative activities. The laughter and joy of the children were infectious, and I found myself reconnecting with my inner child. It was a poignant reminder of the impact we can have on the next generation, instilling in them a love and respect for all forms of life.
As the sun set over the stunning beaches of Mayapo, I reflected on the day’s experiences. The Wellbeing Route had not only allowed me to contribute to animal welfare but had also enriched my understanding of the Wayuu culture. I left La Guajira with a heart full of love and a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that even small actions can create ripples of change in the world.
