Additional Information

Get to know all the points of the famous Rio Negro (Black River) on board a safe and comfortable speed boat. On a boat trip across the Negro River towards the floating platform for interaction with the porpoises, you will have the opportunity to swim with these docile animals and observe them when fed by a native. The trip continues to an indigenous community to participate in a presentation ritual and learn a little bit about their culture. Then, enjoy a tasty regional lunch and watch the phenomenal Meeting of the Waters!

  • Porpoises are sensitive animals and aiming at the safety of visitors and the welfare of the animals, some care is necessary:
  • Do not feed them;
  • Do not scream;
  • Do not intentionally touch them;
  • Do not use sunscreen, repellent, body cream or oil. When in contact with certain products, porpoises have their eyes and smell attacked.
  • In the period of ebb there is a phenomenon in the rivers called Piracema (fish migratory movement) which influences, in some cases, the porpoises to follow a shoal that is passing through, and for that reason does not appear as usual in the lakes where visitors are taken for this interaction; that is, there are possibilities of not interacting with these animals, a fact that we can only conclude on the spot on the day of the tour.
  • Regardless of weather conditions, Tours will take place normally. The above schedules may change due to weather, access, or other factors that the company believes may interfere with the safety or well-being of passengers.
  • Wear light clothes; bring a towel and swimwear. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent (remember the warning regarding contact with animals)
  • In the period of the ebb (September to December) according to the level of the rivers, the visit to the water lilies lake is likely to be suspended, being replaced by a walk in the jungle glimpsing species of plants of the Amazon.
  • We suggest you taking cash in local currency in case of personal expenses with handicrafts and consumption at the bar
  • Attention: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no interaction with the porpoises in the water for an indefinite period.

Great time, loved the tour - We were picked up and dropped off at our hotel, which was far from the port. We had a great, English speaking guide, and really enjoyed each of the different things we did on our tour. Swim with Pink Dolphins? DONE That!! Hold a Sloth? Done That!! Fish for Really Really Big Fish? Done That. We both agree that this tour was a great value for the money Recommend it to everyone, old or young.

Hits the highlights efficiently! - Nice short tour which hits the highlights. We loved our guide and were able to get a lot of lovely souvenirs. This tour does not venture into the jungle. There is a 20 minute “hike” which is really just a short walk on a bridge, so if you’re looking to go deep into the jungle, this might not be the tour you want. If you want just a taste, this is perfect.

Once in a Lifetime Experience - Our experience was well organised from start to finish. I booked through Viator and the transport was GreyLine but Amazon Explorers actually provided the experience on the day with their own boat and an ‘English speaking guide’ Mr Alves. I arranged by email to be collected from our hotel and they duly obliged, sending a reminder and contacting our hotel the night before to confirm pick up time 07:45. No issues with any of the things we did, they were experiences that we will never probably do again. Our son who lives in Brazil and speaks Portuguese accompanied us. There were two issues which were very disappointing. 1/ The commentary was given in a few different languages by Mr Elves but he focused much of the commentary in Portuguese and only contributed small parts in English. There were at least 9 people who spoke English, so we were annoyed at missing out on learning about the historical facts and more. 2/ There was a problem with a faulty microphone which could not be fixed, so when our guide provided any commentary it was against the background of the boats engine. The visits to the Porpoises (we swam with them), Meeting of the Waters, The Indigenous People and lunch were most enjoyable. We had a short 20 minute walk along a wooden bridge to see Giant Lilli Pads. Most people wore shorts, long trousers are not needed, as it was so hot. This was a once in a lifetime trip to Brazil and highly recommended, but I was disappointed with the lack of English commentary. We did complain at the time, but there was not much improvement.

Wish our guide spoke English more than 2% of the time! - The highlight was swimming with the dolphins! Fabulous! However, we were the only 2 English speakers out of 16 people. Francisco spoke Portuguese 98% of the time. We felt left behind. Tour promised English speaking guide, perhaps a mechanical translator.

Buyer beware… - Working with Gray Line was a terrible experience. I was on a cruise to the port and requested confirmation a number of times to ensure we had the right pick up spot. I had to proactive on my part to get responses from this tour group. When the day came they did not show up or did they make an effort to communicate. Once I complained that we were missed it was amazing how well they communicated. Also they shared that they tried numerous times to communicate but only the only communication that came through was after we complained. It ruined our day and the company seems a bit shady. When it came to a refund they only wanted to do a partial. Buyer beware…
