Featuring a diverse array of plant species from around the globe, this park is often referred to as the town’s green heart. Within the park lies the historic Villa Angiolina, the birthplace of Croatian tourism.
• Hotel Kvarner - Established in 1884, this was the first hotel in the region, marking the onset of tourism in Kvarner Bay. Remarkably, it was built in just nine months. Significant efforts were made to establish Opatija as a chic health resort, drawing comparisons to Nice in France.
• Obalno šetalište Franje Josipa I - Also known as Lungomare, this 14 km long seaside promenade links several towns and cities. A portion of this promenade will be explored while wandering through the city.
• St. Jacob’s Church - Located in the heart of Opatija, the Church of St. James is one of the town’s most important structures. The history of Opatija is intricately linked to this church and its monastery, as the town derives its name from the Croatian word for abbey, “Opatija.”
• Maiden With The Seagull - Erected in 1956, the Maiden with a Seagull sculpture has become one of Opatija’s iconic symbols. Previously, the site was occupied by the “Madonna del Mare,” a creation by sculptor Rathausky from Graz.
• Market Opatija - At Opatija’s market, visitors can purchase fruits and vegetables from the local market gardens, along with honey, cheese, and other regional specialties. Fresh seafood from the Adriatic is also available. Besides being the main hub for purchasing food, Opatija’s market serves as a popular gathering spot for locals and a significant landmark in the modern town.
