  • Raufarholshellir - We visit the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. We will witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while we walk in the path of a lava that flowed thousands of years ago. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock.

Superb trip with a fantastic guide - Alex made this trip a true adventure - unforgettable experience, I must say! The best parts: the ice formations and the formidable darkness and silence in the tunnel.

Fun and interesting experience - My family enjoyed walking through the lava cave. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The group stayed together on the way out but we could walk back slowly and take lots of photos on the way back.

I've never heard my husband say "awesome" so many times! - A really interesting hour. The guide was fab (so sorry but I didn't catch her name). She was very knowledgeable and incredibly patient whilst I took hundreds of pics! Thank you, we'll never forget the experience.

Short and entertaining - If you are looking for a short and entertaining tour not too far from Reykjavik, the Lava tunnel tour is a good choice. You go about 400 meters in, 30 meters deep. The guide was very fun. We booked it with transfer from the BIS terminal which went smoothly.

Well worth doing - On the whole this was a very good trip to do. Not overly long so ideal if you have a morning or afternoon to spare. The tunnels are quite spectacular and the guide very good. You are supplied with hard hats and crampon’s for your boots as the floor of the caves are rocky and uneven and up and down so be aware if you’re balance isn’t good , we’re in our 60’s and had no problem. One negative is the bus pick up can be confusing as there can be several buses picking up different people for different tours and the same time and they are not always clearly marked. They also will take you to the bus station first to be transferred to your coach. It’s ok once you get used to it ask the bus driver if you’re unsure they’re usually helpful apart from one miserable chap we had for this tour. To conclude the lava tunnels are well worth doing.

Not 3 hours but less than 1.5 - It was less than 1.5 hour walk down the tunnel and not 3 hours as advertised. The information provided by the guide was trivial. The experience felt overpriced and overrated

Everyone should walk through a lava tunnel - We met the bus at BSI. Left on time. Our lava tour started on time after a brief safety talk. The walk is easy but can be slippery and could be challenging for someone with balance problems (ice, dark, small staircases) Vanessa was our guide and was great. The lava tube is amazing and a must see while in Iceland. Our bus dropped us off at a bus stop near our hotel. We were back home in the anticipated time frame.
